MG MG Y Type - Brakes on YT
I started YT 2659 for the first time this year. As I was heading down the driveway, I quickly realized the I did not have any brakes. Thank God the emergency brake worked. I found the brake reservoir under the gas pedal. It was bone dry. I filled it and and bled out my brakes. Is this reservoir only for the front brakes or for all 4 wheels? If there is a rear reservoir, and where is it located? |

It is the only reservoir. How long has it been stood? I would think that if the master cylinder was empty that the seals have leaked and need replacing, John |

I drove it last fall before I winterized it. I had this car since 2011 and never checked or knew where the brake fluid reservoir was. I will keep a watchful eye on the brake fluid level. |

Hi Jim If you filled this before putting the car away the fluid has gone somewhere!! Pull all the wheels off and check the brake pads. There should also be signs of a leak on the floor of the garage. Paul |

If the fluid has leaked from the front seals then the pedal box holds quite a lot of fluid before anything leaks onto the floor. I found that mine was leaking when I jacked up one front corner and it ran out, John |

Mr Spears, I don't mean to be rude but it is obvious that you have a very limited knowledge about how a braking system works and for this reason I would recommend in the strongest possible terms that you leave the maintenance and repair of the brakes on your car to someone who is qualified to work on them. Brakes are not something to be sorted out on a web page.
It doesn't matter a great deal if you cannot get your car going or going properly. It's a completely different scenario if your car can't stop when you need it to. It can be literally a matter of life or death - either your life or some other innocent road user's life. Please, leave brake repairs, along with steering repairs, to qualified people who know what they are doing. |

John - when I mentioned the pads I was inferring looking for brake fluid contamination on them which would have indicated weeping wheel cylinders rather than a weeping master cylinder or brake pipe system. Sorry I was not more obvious.
Neil - what you say is true but a tad harsh on Jim and his abilities. It is true that it is always a good idea to get final sign off by a brake and steer shop (also suspension too) but it is also essential that we know where the components are and can perform home maintenance and greasing. After all so would the original owners. Jim's initial questions are valid for the average owner to ask who is less experienced and this is, after all, how we all learn - by asking and imitating.
