MG MG Y Type - Brooklands Test Hill Ascent 24th October

I aim to try and get my YB up the Test Hil at Brooklands this Saturday morning at a members event organised by the Brooklands Trust. Anyone else partaking? Anyone been up it? Presumably first all the way - even with my new found grunt!
Marc Hanson

Marc,

First all the way, yes.
I've done it a number of times in my YT (I think it even featured as an old picture of the month on mgytypes.org a few years ago (May 2005)).
First time I did it was with me and my 4-year old daughter. I changed to second and it cruised up nicely.
The next time I did it she was a couple of years older (as was the car!) and my uncle joined us (he's a volunteer at the museum there). I tried the same ploy of changing up but the additional weight meant we ground to a very undignified halt about two thirds of the way up. I then had to roll all the way back down to the bottom before doing it again - in first all the way!

I don't know whether it's something to do with the angle of the car, or my worn gearbox and the high revs but I did always find that if I stayed in first then I had to physically hold the gear-stick to stop it popping out of gear near the top - as that too can leave you somewhat stranded!

Best of luck.

Cheers,
Saul.

Holding it in first with the high revs to prevent it jumping out of gear is indicative Saul of worn locators in the gear box or something like that. I hate gear boxes (too complicated for a simpleton like me) but I do know Neil Cairns knows the problem and cure and there may already be something on the Technical Centre or on Hints and Tips that can point you in the right direction before you ask Neil. If you do, please use the link on H&T and ask him to include me on your reply and I will then post it (annonymously so no one knows you asked - unless they read this first :-))!

Saul, thanks for the tips! They may cancel tomorrow if wet. If they don't I'll try it in first on my own. If that works I'll take my daughters up too!
Marc Hanson

Thanks for the gearbox info Paul.
I'm not too concerned about mine at the moment though as the only time it's ever jumped out is on two of my Brooklands test-hill attempts when I was doing about 6000 revs in first while pointing up at the sky.

It is therefore way, way down my list of "things that I should sort out on the YT if I can ever be bothered" ;-)

Marc,

Please let someone film your ascend (sp.?) and post them on Youtube for us to enjoy?
W. van der Veer

Sadly the test hill was too wet and they therefore cancelled! Maybe next year.
