MG MG Y Type - Captive nuts

While attempting to remove one of the rear wings, I have found that the captive nut on the bottom bolt at the wing front edge, inside the box section, turns with the bolt. (No surprise there!)
I have my own scheme for sorting this, which involves cutting & re-welding, but before I do, does anybody have any better ideas or experience in this area?

Hi Tony

I am not sure if it will help you but I think it will - go to the Technical Centre on www.mgytypes.org, and click on Hints & Tips, then go to the Hint on Running Boards. I have used these replacement captive nuts quite succesfully in a number of places so this may provide you with an answer.

Paul,
Thank you for your speedy reply to my query. I was aware of clinch nuts but these need access to both sides which I dont have without cutting into the
c post box section. It did set me trawling the internet for different kinds of captive nuts however. Eventually I came across Well Nuts which were new to me. They seem to be used extensively on kit cars and motor bikes (and toilet seats apparently!). After grinding off the bolt head and punching through its remains into the box section, a 5/16 wellnut has done the job admirably, for now anyway, but I guess only time will tell.

Well nuts - almost sounds like a comment on our sanity!!

Did you get these from any particular website?

As to the Clinch nuts, I was able to use these with great effect even though I could only get on one side to replace the captive ones for the running board attachment points.

Any way Tony, glad to hear you got sorted and look forward to hearing more about your (you're???) well nuts!

Hi Paul,
I found them from UK supplier on Ebay.
They consist of a brass nut moulded into one end of a short length of neoprene rubber tube, flanged at its other end. In my case, Push the tube into the hole in the c-post against the flange;Push a bolt through the hole in the rear wing & screw into the brass nut. This compresses the rubber in the c-post box section and Bingo! To disconnect, just unscrew the bolt and remove everything. I should have said 8mm rather than 5/16 - everythings metric these days. Just 2 things - I had to enlarge the hole in the c-post & thin down the thickness of the flange on the wellnut. I didn't go into this in detail before as I thought probably everyone would know about these nuts.
Hope this helps,

I've never heard of Well Nuts, but have used Riv Nuts (put it in to Google)but only with aluminium constructions. They work well and are easy to use.
