MG MG Y Type - Chassis Identification

Hi,
My first input. Can anyone help, please?
I have purchased my main Y type, details on this site in my profile.

I have also acquired/saved another early Y type, 1948, to see if it can be saved/restored.
I am confused as the V5 does not match with the plates on the bulkhead and it quotes the engine size as being 1140cc not 1250cc.
I know Austin, Morris and Wolsley engines were 1140cc and wonder if this is an error or if the smaller engines were fitted at factory at one stage.
The engine has a brass octagonal plate with appropriate number 11268 stamped upon it indicating an original unit.

I understand the chassis should have a number impressed on it too, but cannot locate this at present.
Can you give me precise detail as to where this might be found?
Thanks.

Incidentally, if anyone wants a deep project, this may become available as it will need more than I could do, or I may split for spares if that proves to be the only option.

Hi the chassis number is stamped onto the chassis frame on the nearside chassis leg about 4" in front of the hole the steering rack comes through. If you cannot see it , it may be covered by the inner wing which bolts on to the chassis at this point, however my number is showing just below the inner wing.

Hi,

I have attached a photo of the front nearside chassis extension where you should find the chassis number

Thanks Chris and Rob.
I shall go searching again tomorrow with more hope of finding it and knowing just where to clean.
I shall post again when I have found it,

Bob: Rob's given you the info on where to find the chassis number of your car/s... as to the capacity of the engine, only the Wolseley 10 (1939 on) and Morris Ten series M (1938 on, I think) used the 1140cc version of what became the XPAG, with 1250cc, in 1939, in the MG TB. No MG used the 1140 engine, and Austin certainly didn't as they were still the opposition at that time. It sounds from the fact that you have an octagonal plate on the engine as if it is a MG XPAG, but you can always check the cylinder bore (66.5mm)if you're not sure. Interesting detective work!

Hi Tim,
Thanks to you and others for the helpful comments, the chassis number stamped exactly as advised.

I think DVLA must have it wrong and have never been advised of the fact.
It will be interesting if I send the V5 to notify them of my ownership and the correct engine size to see what their response is.

Yes, the detective work is so interesting that I am even competing with my wife who is researching family history, lol.

The V5 also still regards the car as being Maroon whereas it was painted Dark Blue some time in the 80's I guess. The owner from Sept 1990-April 2005 tells me it was blue when he had it.

You will probably need a letter of support of your claim when contacting the DVLA so enquire beforehand exactly what they need then contact David Pelham (UK Rep) via the Contact Us page at www.mgytypes.org and ask if he can help you out with that. I am sure he will be happy to do so. We do this on a fee free basis.
