MG MG Y Type - Clutch slipping

My clutch is starting to slip but only seems to do it after a long period on the road. When it does slip, it happens under load and continues to slip until I let up on the gas. At that point it sometimes grabs again and sometimes doesn't.

The engine is leaking a good amount. It drips about once per second when hot, once per two seconds when just warm. Is there any way for oil to be getting on the clutch or is this thing just worn out?
Steve Simmons

The entire gearbox is easy to pull out and check. However, when you stick it back in, do remember to reattach the earthing strap and do not cross thread the bolts.

Guess I'm used to the MGB where the thought of removing a transmission is equal to having all you lower teeth pulled without anesthetic.

Support load of engine, mark front of propshaft fro remount, remove propshaft, remove front seats, & carpets, undo and remove cover, support gearbox, undo bolts, remove box through the car's cockpit. In essence that's it. You then have access to the clutch plate assy. & flywheel.

Any oil from the rear bearing 'reverse-scroll' seal will be flung off the front of the flywheel. It very rarely gets onto the clutch linings. Sounds as if your lining is running on its rivets, not a good thing as this scores the flywheel face. The rivets expand slightly when they get hot, and lift the lining away from the metal face, but will be OK when cool. When new the rivets are well counter-sunk below the clutch friction material's face.

If you have to remove the flywheel due to any scoring take the opportunity to have it lightened and balanced. If you want to know how much to remove consult Neil Cairns. I did this to my TF together with other engine component balancing and believe I get an appreciable increase in acceleration, speed and engine running smoothnes. Remember the engines for T and Y Series M.G.s were all from Morris Engines Branch and were only cast and assembled to the quality levels demanded of Morris saloons and commercials of the 1940s and 50s not performance sports cars and sports saloons!

Also meant to add to the quick guide to gearbox removal that you will need to disconnect the clutch linkage. When you replace the clutch always replace the thrust bearing - even if there is a fair amount left on it - its such a cheap part it is not worth having to pull the box out again to replace later.
