MG MG Y Type - Colour of Instrument Panel on a YT

The instrument panel on my YT when I acquired it in 2009 itwas chipped and needed repainting. I didn't do that and merely took back the panel to the metal finish. This is I guess stainless steel.
However, I thought that I should remove and repaint it,I assumed in black. Clearing out a load of tat I came across a set of files which included photos of the car as it was presented for sale. A couple of these show the panel painted a shade of beige and certainly not black. The impression is more subtle than with 'in your face' black

The YT is painted red.
Any thoughts and if the 'beige' is chosen what is the colour code please?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Cheers

Are you referring to the metal instrument panel Jerry? If so, Richard is correct see the weblink he posted for our Colours page above.

If so, then actually it is Metallic Bronze. Rust-oleum Specialty Paints do a good match. Use the aerosol can.

If you cannot get this in the UK let me know and I will see if I can mail you a can from here in the US.

Thanks Paul

Will show that to a local paint factors and see if they can obtain the code.

Your offer us very thoughtful. Its not an immediate concern just one of the minor jobs to be done!

The centre pannel of my Y/T showed (36 years back) the same gold bronze that is used with TDs. I got a spray can from either NTG or Moss and after applying it, painted a couple of coates of clear lacker for protection. It looks right :o)

Thanks Anton

Had I bothered to check in Clausagers T Series book I would have seen one there. Yes both Moss and NTG can supply the cans.

How is the YT coming along? Did you by any chance book into the MG Europe Event held in Oporto in August this year? I know we talked about it.

We are joining up with Victor Rodrigues a Y owner from Switzerland. Though he will be driving his MGB V8 and has organised his V8 Swiss Register on the trip. So the YT will be a somewhat slower participant!

Progress is slower than expected. Recently, I finished fitting a new wiring loom and also was busy sorting the driving belt ratio of the Shorrock. Not easy with all the fenner locks, double pullies v-belts and tensioner. Got the ratio of 1 : 1.16 right now.

Even though, I was hoping for, I doubt that I will be able to make it to Porto. Once the car is finished "mechanically" there is still some upholstery trim to be completed and a stiff Swiss roadworthy waiting. In addition, I would hate to go on such a long trip with the engine not run in properly and the car not sorted.

Maybe you can extend your trip to the Continent and come check my car out in Switzerland ....

I am currently installing an Underdash cover in my YT and having to create a 2 piece one with a number of splits in the pieces to fit around the wiring harness and steering wheel shaft. It is a pain.

Can I suggest you look at making and installing the Underdash cover and associated insulation before wiring in the dash.

Dear Stuart

Thank you for the warning. The wiring is all done and I am not using an underdash panel because my long legs would not fit in the leg room. I am 6'4" tall :o)

Have a nice day

I can understand your decision due to your height.

The Underdash cover is about 1cm thick (trim board and under carpet insulation) and reduces the heat and sound from the engine. It fits flush with the firewall, and stops well above the pedals where it meets the carpet.

I am going to do a trail fit tomorrow morning and I will take a photo and post it later in the day.

cheers

That is a very tempting thought but sadly we have booked ferries and with the programme that we have in mind there is insufficent time available.

We are meeting up in Oporto with several of your fellow countrymen.
Victor Rodrigues besides being an avid Y owner is a contact for the MGB V8 Swiss Register and is organising a pre MGEEOTY run to which he has kindly accepted the YT. So I sense we will be running as rear end charlie for the week before as we tail the later and more powerful MGs!

Please do keep me informed of your progress on the YT. It will be very fitting to see it back on the road in this the 70th year of the Y.

Sorry I didn't post yesterday, but family descended on us and I didn't get down to my shed (5km away).

Attached is a photo showing the board and uncompressed undercarpet insulation material I am using for insulation. (overall around 10mm thick)

Check out LTBYs chapter 12 for photos of the board and how far it comes down the firewall (to level with bottom of Battery Box). I have decided to bring mine down a bit lower (but without insulation behind) so the carpet will cover the bottom of the board and not just butt up to the board.

A hint, if you do install the Under dash cover, make two (2) creases about 5mm apart using a blunt cold chisel on either the front or back of the board where you intend to bend the board. Creases to be on the inside of the bend.
