MG MG Y Type - Correct location YA horn?
I'm finally installing the wiringloom that I bought from Tim Griggs some years ago (a BIG thank you for labelling it, Tim!). Now I'm puzzled by the location of the horn. According to the loom the horn should be under the radiator somewhere, but mine is fitted on the bulkhead more like an YB? Should the horn on a YA be under the radiator, if so can some body provide me with a picture? |

Willem, The horn on a YA/YT is mounted on a bracket that is fixed to the front of the crossmember under the radiator. If you look at the front of the crossmember, you should see a single 3/8" BSF tapped hole. Not sure if the horn faces left or right - need an originality expert for that answer !. As there are two wires to the horn, you should realise that the horn is always "live", and is switched by earthing the horn button. I remind you of this, as with even a near flat battery, the sudden earthing of the horn while fitting can result in personal injury when reacting under the car to a sudden noise. Don't ask me how I know this. have fun |

The horn (Lucas Altette) is secured by a horseshoe bracket. The bracket is on the left, horn dome off to the right of the car. Paul |

Can any body supply a photo of the correct location of the horn. I have a part welded onto the chassis but it is on the right side not on the cross member? Frank |

Frank - I will get a picture on here tomorrow for you. Paul |

You should get your coachman to stand with his head through the open sun roof |

As an afterthought you could mount your man on the boot box, but if he falls off its a frightful chore ordering a new horn down from London. |

Hi Willem My 1951 YA has twin horns fitted to the bulkhead near the centre battery box. Regards Geoff |

Geoff Those would have been added as either a dealer fit (in the case of University Motors cars) or an after-market fit. All Ys, YTs and YBs up to YB 0459 had the single Lucas Altette (model HF 1235, Service# 701403F) horn as standard. Some YT EXUs also had them fitted as standard. Hopefully you have a n/s fuse box, and the later RF95/2 control box too as the windtones draw much more current than the Altette. Paul |

Paul Thanks for the information. Yes - mine was originally supplied by University Motors. I will check out the fuse box and control box. Geoff |

Hi Geoff, Can you post (or send me) some pictures of how your the twin horns are fitted? I just received two Lucas H+L Windtones that I may wire in (with a relay). |
Willem van der Veer |
Hi Willem Yes - I will email them directly to you. Regards Geoff |

As a reminder, full wiring diagrams can be downloaded from the Technical Centre on www.mgytypes.org. For the correct wiring of twin windtones - you will need the later YB diagram, although I am not sure how University Motors got around the additional load problem on earlier cars they customized.
