MG MG Y Type - correct screw head query

I am in the process of fitting the wood trim. As my Y was completely stripped when I got it I am unsure whether the correct screws for fitting the door wood surrounds and other wood trim should be slotted or poxi(cross head). I have found a supplier of stainless raised countersunk in both slotted and poxi and would like to order the correct type.

Thanks for your help Chris

Hi Chris

They are slotted.

Hi Chris

I tend to agree with Paul and have used slotted screws for the internal fittings because I think they look better than 'phillips' and they are easier to unscrew.

However my YB had phillips screws and while I can't say they were original all the internal wood and cards were original. Also D. Lawrence in chpt 12 of LTBY's
suggests without any question that phillips screws were used, so may be there is some doubt!

Just a thought

By the late 40s certainly most of the car industry over in the US used Philips screws, I dont think they had really gained traction in the UK. Give the vintage look of our cars, and also the carpentry nature of the wood surrounds I opted for slotted brass screws when I did my car. Indeed all the wrecker cars that I have seen had slotted for the most part with only the odd + head ... but that is not to say that towards the end the MG Car Co may have been using them in preference. On my ZA which is 90+% original inside they had slotted.

Thanks Guys, I will take a look at chapter 12 in LTBY's. It seems from your comments I could use either, that explains why I have seen Ys with both slotted and phillips screw heads.

Hi Guys,
You have just reminded me of a job I have been meaning to do ever since I put my YB back on the road in 1997.When I rebuilt it, I saved all the old fixtures and fittings until the job was done. The car had been off the road for almost 30 years so I reckon much of it was original.
Interestly the screws used throughout the car interior were Philips Chrome Raised Cross Head. At the time I could only get Pozidrive raised chrome and have been meaning to change them ever since. There is a subtle difference between Philips and Pozi in that the latter has extra very small slots between the main slots. Perhaps not that important?
Happy driving.

I had the same question when I was unsure which to use and asked the same question on this site. I did not disassemble that part of the car but did find a package containg the screws from the window surrounds which happen to be the cross or philips style screws. With the interior being almost finished I will be using chromed philips screws. I agree who really knows for sure what is correct considering the state of the car industry and the availbily of parts at the time.

I agree with Frank. My 1950 YA had raised head, chromed steel csk Phillips screws. I've replaced these with similar, but in A2 stainless.

My '52 YB had chromed raised head csk Phillips screws throughout as well...I have kept these for the trim pieces but I use traditional brass (slotted) screws for the wooden door surrounds as they don't rust.
