MG MG Y Type - Cylinder head
I have problems with a cylinder head on an otherwise untouched and original 1250-engined MG YB. We are getting oil into the cooling system, and have traced the source to the rear cover of the cylinder head. My question is : should there be a brass blanking plug in the oily, or is it normally only sealed with the gasket between the head and the rectangular rear cover ? |

Hi Dominic, Yes there should be a blanking plug in there. A gasket will not contain the oil pressure. See picture to confirm this is the plug you are discussing ?. The plug is highlighted with chalk. If the thread in the head is damaged, there appears to be enough metal in the area to re-thread and plug with a suitable screw if you cannot source a "new" part. I can send you a used original plug from Australia if you cannot get one closer to home. Cheers Tony ![]() |

Strange that I never noticed that before! Thanks. Larry |

That was the information I needed, thanks to all who replied. The head was just treated to a complete rebuild and unleaded conversion because the valve guides were worn and the engine was smoking a lot when idling. The rebuilder seems to have forgotten to replace the plug before sending the head back to me. I made a plug this morning, and we have refitted the head, rinsed out the cooling system fifteen times to get clear coolant again, and changed the oil again. Now everything seems to be fine. If anyone keeps a register of these cars, this one is car 177 Dominic |

Hello Dominic, I think you have missed a number on your chassis number you have quoted (177). As you know all MG chassis numbers started at 0251. |

Dominic What region do you live in Switzerland? I stay in the Kanton Aargau, at the lake Hallwil. Fel free to get in touch :o) Anton Piller, Y/T 4220 ![]() |

Hi Anton I am in Albisgütli, Zürich. The Y isn't mine, I have been working on it for a good friend. My own car is a MGA (also supercharged like your car!) Richard Not my car so I cannot register it. It has been partially rewired at some point, but is otherwise completely in original state. I will have to look at the numbers again when I go back to replace the tappet chest screws, as one cracked as it was being fitted and that isn't a part that I have floating around in my spares. Dominic, That is fair comment and fully understood. Perhaps you could pass on the comments and seek the permission of the owner. If they allow the car to be registered it would be a welcome addition. If the owner wishes to read up on the privacy statement it is fully explained and clear on the site. The International MG Y Type Register complies with data protection and respects the owners privacy. Wishing you all a happy Easter, I'm currently far away from my Y Types and looking forwards to being reunited early next week and perhaps the odd run if the weather is kind. Anton, have you ever been to Sommertreff event in Germany? www.mg-y.de I recommend it, fantastic event I've been to twice, great company too. Richard |

Richard No, i have not been at the Sommertreff in Germanys because I am playing with the Y/T since about 35 years. When I bought it it was a heap of rusted scrap metal. Hopefully it will be ready for roadworthy this summer :o) Cheers Anton |
