MG MG Y Type - Dash Clock

The only item that is not working on Y5103 is the clock, I have had a couple of attempts to repair it but to no avail. I realise the clock is unimportant, but it irks me that it is not working! Does anyone have any ideas regarding repair? Maybe your man who repairs the indicator timer Paul

Do you know this article?http://www.angelfire.com/alt/yd3/TD/clock.pdf

Maybe a used clock, other than your own, can be made to run?

Don't count on a reliable clock however; I read an article from the late 50's on buying a used Y-type. The comment on the non-running clock was something like 'they never do'....

Well currently it is right twice a day though?

Another option for you is to retro fit a quartz mechanism. I do not know exactly how this works ... but I believe someone out there may have done this already.

Hi Mel,

You have probably tried this ... from memory about 40 years ago. There is a tiny flexible carbon brush which touches momentarily on a wire which pokes out of the oscillating "flywheel" as it goes past. The carbon wears out but if the wire is bent VERY SLIGHTLY it will make contact once again .... and might work.

Thank you all for your advice.I am still in the UK for a month, so when I get home I will attempt another clock repair.

And you could contact Mike Eck in the USA who does electronic upgrades to the clock mechanism. His website:

I had mine repaired a while back - I should be able to dig out the company who did it if that's any use. Another idea is to replace the clock with a similar one used on a small modern battery operated quartz clock..there was an article on this in the Octagon Bulletin (I think) sometime ago?
Just noticed previous post which should be an answer.

Or you could try this solution -

The clocks4classics solution is brilliant! Has anyone installed one of these? Ewan YT2888 YT4825
