MG MG Y Type - Dashboard delema

Dear all, as it turns out, I have one "dish" faced and one "flat faced" instrument in my dash. What is correct for the speedo and tachometer? Thanks, Tom
Thomas McNamara

Attached pictures might be of use to you. Note these are from a 1949 Ya. Hence does not have a Tachometer.

Thanks TJ. I forgot to mention that the car is a YT which, as you know, has a different dash arrangement. Yours is nice looking though! Regards, Tom

Morning Thomas

The correct instruments are flat faced.

The correct instruments (with the exception of the ammeter) were made by British Jaeger.

Speedometer should be British Jaeger S.516 for the mph version and S.516K for the kph version.

The tachometer should be British Jaeger K.30 combined with a clock.

Hope that helps you Tom

Thanks Paul. BTW, where did you get this info? I looked on the web and in your "books" but could find no definitive answer. Flat like the TC, not dished like the TD! Tom

Thomas

In case you start hunting: Early TDs (up to approx. 1951/52) also used flat faced "chronometric" 5 inch instruments.
With the introduction of the TDII, "magnetic" instruments with dished dials where being used.

As Paul points out in his mail above, the Speedometer should be of the S.516 type and if its showing Miles there should be a second code shown like "1600" referring to the transmission ratio - depending on the wheels diameter (on a TD, 15" rims are being used, whilst on a YT, 16" rims).

WOW! you guys are amazing! THANKS, Tom

Hi Thomas,
I agree with Paul and Anton's comments, they are flat faced instruments with convex glass. They are typically a light blue metallic colour but can have a green tinge particularly refaced gauges and it also depends how much sunlight and thus fading they have been exposed to. We also have an early TD with the Jaeger Chronometric instruments and the Speedo is S.516 with 1740 as the cable revolutions. The Tacho is numbered K39 which I thought should be the same for YT having the same engine and generator and reduction box? There were large numbers of TD sent to the USA so a donor should not be too hard to find.
Cheers
