MG MG Y Type - dismantling Y-bonnet

Can anyone tell me, how to get the centre-rod out of the top sction of the bonnet, please? I had no probloem in removing the brass-rods of the vented side pannels (by tapping with a hammer and drift).
Somehow the centre-rod does not want to move!

Morning Anton

It is exactly the same as the side pieces. It may well be that it is somewhat stiffer so I would strongly suggest that you clamp the wings of the top of the bonnet/hood to a heavy work bench (top down) and preferably one next to a wall or bolted to the floor so it wont move.

With a strong, but small punch or drift (smaller than the inside diameter of the hinge)give short, sharp taps with about a 2 or 3lb (1 - 1.5kg) hammer.

Eventually the pin will move out and when you have about 4 inches of it out you will be able to clamp onto it with a vice grip and extract it while twisting it about 90 degrees or so from left to right and back.

While doing this, use plenty of penetrating oil spraying it onto the pin and onto the remaining lenght of the hinges where the pin is still lodged in. This may all take some time!

Replacing the pin is easy though. Make sure both it and the hinges are totally clean and free from grit and dust, then remount the wings of the top on a bench and with the help of a friend and 1lb hammer and penerating oil, gently tap the pin in being sure to get it in straight. It should not require too much force. If it does, something is not aligned properly.

I have done that and I soaked it in penetrating oil then drifted it out a bit. I then used an electric drill to spin it and pull it out while spinning. This does a lot of cleaning while turning.

Thank you Gentlemen for your quick reply. I did not want to brake anything - but now, with those super guidelines I am going to get the culprit out. I like the idea of clamping the wings and afterwards using a drill :o)

If you are going to use the electric drill, do make sure that the chuck is tight on the pin - you do not want to score the pin up with a spinning chuck. Also while the pin is tight, beware of the drill kicking out of your hand and spinning wild. This could not only cause you an injury, but could also result in bending the pin out of line. This is especially true the further out the pin comes and the more potential whip that could be exerted on the pin.

Dear Paul and Sandy
I did it. the pin is out and the paint is stripped off the bonnet.

Thank you both, Anton
Anton Piller

Good job Anton, and thank you for your reply that you were succesful. I remember the first time I did this it was very frustrating.
