MG MG Y Type - Door wood
Hi Everyone....working away at YT parts and I have been looking at the doors today. The drivers door needs the bottom wood pieces replacing after a few holes are repaired and I am having trouble figuring out how the wood frame comes out. I have removed all the nails from around the perimeter of the door and I can't get anything to move. I'm beginning to think that the folded over metal lip has to be all straitened and the whole wood frame lifted off the door.
Why would MG put all the screws that hold the frame together with the heads against the door skin making it impossible to remove the wood one piece at a time. Any advise would be welcomed. Cheers. Joe |

You are correct - the steel lip needs to be peeled back to remove the door frame from the steel skin. These cars were never designed to be "restored", just driven for 20+years then thrown away/scrapped. No one in 1947 could have imagined that 74 years later there were a few thousand people around the world still trying to preserve these cars for the driving/restoring pleasure. Tony - you said "for the driving/restoring pleasure." Are you certain about that or is it a masochistic pleasure? Joe - I will completely destroy the wood I need to get out in my doors to get it out as I have (courtesy of Neil Coombes who sells YT wood door kits to NTG) a full set of door timbers coming to me. I will then screw the new wood to the old ... from the inside of the frame! Paul |

Paul, and Tony Thanks for your input. Paul, according to what I see, in the NGT catalog only the bottom wood pieces and the one up the hinge side are available. I'm trying to preserve the rest as they are in good shape. Are the others available as well? Joe |

Joe, Mike Sherrill of Perth, WA provides a detailed procedure to fit the wood timbers into the doors of M.G. TC's on page 180 of his TC's Forever. I suspect that the installation of the wood into the somewhat larger YT doors is similar, if not identical. I cannot copy it here for you as his book is copyrighted. Perhaps you can obtain a copy of his work from TC owners in Canada. Rocky TC2482 YB0952 |

Hi Rocky Only thinking of you the other day- How are you going with your Y Type. willy |

Willy, Merry Christmas! Hope you will be enjoying your Summer at numerous MG events. Yes, YB0952, aka Constance, is finished. We have taken her out around town several times and she draws a crowd wherever we stop. Steers beautifully, very unlike the TC! The interior came out very well. Catherine did the headliner, I did the interior wood and vinyl trim panels. Door seals and carpets were a joint effort. Saddened to hear of the trajic event in Devonport with the jump castle. Merry Christmas Rocky,
Constance is looking very nice, congrats to you and Catherine- top job-!,The interior looks fantastic. Thanks for the pics. Stay Safe willy Thanks for your thoughts, I can't imagine how shattered their parents must be- The school is only a couple of mins. up the road from me here, it was a nice clear day, sun shining and hardly a breeze . We didn't have any wind at all at home and the airport weather station didn't record anything but they sure got something weird at the school--really sad |

@ Rocky this is really a great car my wife wanted "Paul" black, so i made it black but your color is so beautiful.... and the rims.... here in germany it would not be possible to change to such wired rims i think |

i have made a schematic picture with some colours to explain what i would do
but it depends how it looks like in realyty first i would weld some steel inside as i have done it to stabilize the construction the YT will be not too heavy so it will be easy to get it off the chassis with 4 person, perhaps 2 put it about 120 cm from the ground so it will be easy to work on then i would cut away the purple part in my picture if it is rusty and bad then next step the green part then the red and blue part if the black part is too rusty too it will be difficult because it is a curved difficult part i had a parkside akku side grinder with a speed control so it was able to cut with a lower speed i cut away step by step to see what is under the part in my blog you have more pictures as any other place i think, and i have a lot of more pictures but still not enough so make more then you think |
