MG MG Y Type - engine rebuild

guday everone.i
was wondering if any of you mg owners would be able to recomend a engine rebuilder in australia pref victoria for my mg y. although its is all running ok it is throwing so much oil out from just about everywhere it is nearly imposible to drive! i was looking into having a rear main seal fitted and ann gaskets replaiced.

I am in Queensland but will ask a few Y-Typers I know in Melbourne who might be best to know XPAG engines.

Is your car an early or late car - what is the Chassis/Car number ?. There were two different engine types in Y-Types.

Cheers

Hi Lee, I will send you an email with a couple of engine builders to consider.

Your car is remarkable - it's the youngest YA known to still exist in Australia and a new car to the Australian Register. Could you post a picture here ?.

G'day Lee,

I am also looking for a local engine rebuilder and have been recommended a fellow Chris Morus, Elite Engine Building, 0416 202012 in Blackburn Victoria. Chris comes highly recommended to me by a a retired motor mechanic with 60 years experience but I must stress that I have never met him or had work done by him. Give him a call to establish his credentials if you wish.

You could also try David Anderson, Andersen Mechanical, 03 9720 8290 who owns a TC and a couple of Morris Tens, all of which have XPAG style engines. None of them leak oil after rebuild by Dave!

Another option for you to consider - I have a spare Wolseley 4/44 XPAW engine in excellent condition, with a fully reconditioned head. Engine is assembled but the head and sump are not fitted. Crankshaft was crack tested, good bearings (may be new, can't remember), pistons have spec clearance, new rings etc. Only needs new con rod bolts and reassembly.

Whereabouts in Victoria are you?

Hi Tony,

Thank you that would be much appreciated.
my email is l_a_balls@hotmail.com
any contacts woukd brme gratefully received.
regarding the car it is very intresting ti hear it may be or be one of the youngest survivers. i dont know a great deal about the car although i have alot of paperwork and log books dating back to the sixtys. as far as im aware and stand to be corrected the car was delivered to new zealand where it has been its whole life until around five year's ago when it was imported by its previous owner to australia. it was never registered here until last year when i put it on the club rego sceme here in victoria. obviously i would be keen to find out any other history it has or is known. kind regards lee

Hey there neil

Thank you very much for your information, i will certainly endeavour to pursue the contacts yoi have mentioned.
putting yoir spare engine in the car does sound tempting and would probably be easier butat this stage i realy would like to try and retain this motor along with its numbers ect
i am in croydon 3136. how about yourself?

kind regards
lee

Just to agree with Neil Wakeman. I use Andersen Mechanicals...David is good. He has been maintaining my Y since I moved back to Victoria a few years ago.

Hi Lee,
I am a bit tardy in responding to you but you should also try Ian Shugg of Crankshaft Rebuilders in Blackburn. Ian is an old school mate of mine and runs an extensive engine overhauling business. Also of interest is Ian has been manufacturing replacement XPAG crankshafts which he can supply in various specs to suit requirement including with modification to run a modern lip seal. He can also supply with larger journals if you are interested.

Delta Camshafts here in Tacoma WA will also rebuild your camshaft for you too - of course though WA is Washington State USA not Western Australia, Australia. Last time I had one done for a guy in the UK the turn around time was one week and $97US plus shipping to and from the UK ... but that was much cheaper than he could get it done in the UK (about 1/3 of the price) and six months quicker than he was quoted.

If you draw a blank in Australia or just want me to get an updated price quote - email me on the link above this post.

Appearing on our eBay search engine tool (if you have not used this yet, you should give it a try at https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/searchebay.shtml) is this little gem

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/MG-TB-TC-TD-TF-YA-YB-YT-Camshaft-STD-1250cc-XPAG-1466cc-XPEG-1940-55-/283013045637

At that price it does make a regrind look like an awfully sensible option though maybe!
