MG MG Y Type - Exhausts

My mild steel exhaust system has rusted through, there is now a hole on the front face of the silencer, and the car sounds quite sporting!!! However, the whole system is due renewal, does anyone have anything good to say about stainless steel systems?? Being tight fisted I have always used mild steel systems on my cars, getting 5 or 6 years out of them. I have heard rumours of SS systems cracking up due to the very THIN metal used.

In March 1990 I obtained from London Stainless Steel Exhaust Centre 249/251 Queenstown Road,
Battersea, London a stainless steel system for my YT.The system is in fact for a YA but in my ignorance then I didnt know there was a difference. However with a few modifications to the front pipe we got it fitted. It has functioned well since and no more problems with rusted out silencers etc.The steel is heavy and there is no evidence of any cracking. The pipe diameter is however about 2/3rds the size of aTD. Is this normal or original for a YA?The system was expensive, more than double the current price NTG is asking for the complete YA/YB system. This may be because of the use of heavy gauge steel. By the way NTG can't supply the front pipe for a YT,they say they need an original for a pattern.Has anyone got one? I suspect it may be the same as a TD. My system came with a Lifetime Guarantee. I found London Stainless from an ad in Classic and Thoughbread or the like, havn't seen the ad in years. Does anyone know if they are still in business? If not I guess the guarantee is worthless. Regardless and notwithstandig the expense I think it was worth it and in the long run cost effective.

The YA tail pipe was smaller and after I replaced it with the larger TD pipe my "better half" has never forgiven me!!!!!!

I fitted a stainless system to my YA and it has so far done 6000 miles and two years with no problems. This was a system supplied form a West Country firm via NTG and it carries a lifetime guarantee....which I like a lot. Two main benefits - the cosmetic one of no rust, and the improved sound which the different resonant behaviour of SS over MS gives. Get in touch for more info if you'd like to.

I believe there is little doubt that the front pipe for the YT is the same as the TC/D/F. Whether the
rest of it would do the trick, I doubt, as you would have problems with length of pipe etc, nothing a good exhaust shop could not sort out. I would be inclined to buy a stainless TD box and front pipe and take my chances with a exhaust shop fitting a pipe in between to your spec (i.e correct bends, correct mounting points etc).

Jeremy,

The 'Y' series exhaust pipe is just a straight run, the only bend is that from the manifold to face the rear of the car. The rear chassis is underslung, unlike the 'T' series which has the chassis above the axle line.

The 'Y' has one of the most simple exhaust systems I have ever seen, appart from a lawnmower!!!!

Have ordered a NTG complete stainless steel system, for £144. The mild steel one came to almost the same price.

Neil,
As you are a member of the MG Octagon Car Club, a Stainless exhaust system, guarenteed for life, possible from the same supplier, would have cost you £97. quite a saving which would have covered a few years subs to the club!!
Spares are on the net pages, see
