That would be an good Y to own!

The Dick Jacobs YB would be a good one to own. It would be great if the next owner would take it racing or sprinting. If anyone going to MG Silverstone wants to see a YB Sprinting on Sunday morning I have had permission (!!) to take my wife's car along to the Sprint. The car is UMG 662 and was 3rd in class at the Daily Express Trophy Meeting in 1953, driven by George Phillips and owned by Gregor Grant of Autosport. In Dick Jacobs book he described it as well worn in 1953 and it is still much the same!

I don't know if I'm being dim, but what's all the black tape doing on the front of the offside wing (in the picture on the Bonhams site)?

Cheers,
Saul.
Saul

Saul, the black tape is the number '32' which was Dick Jacobs number when participating in the 1954 Touring car race at Silverstone. As you would expect, the number was also on both front doors (although originally it was shown in a white circle). When racing, he loosened the headlamps and turned them inwards and re tightened them in this position to avoid damaging the lenses. Quite important as he would drive the car to and from events.

The car reached £6900 with buyer's premium, I see from the Bonhams website. Seems very reasonable for a piece of history... anyone know if it might be a club member who bought it?

The best way to do this would be for you to contact Bonhams, find out who to write to, and write to them with your details (and why you are interested) and ask them to please pass your details on to the buyer with a request for them to contact you. You can then talk with the buyer (hopefully) about the website and all the other wonderful things that Y ownership brings.

Certainly £7k is no money for this car!

£6000 plus premium and tax is £8107.90, if I read Bonhams site correctly.

£8.1k - still a bargain just to say Dick Jacobs sat in it!

Lucky buyer!

Paul Barrow

Tax is only payable on the buyer's premium, not the sale ("hammer") price, so the total is £6000 sale price, £900 premium, and VAT at 17.5% on £900, so by my fingers that's actually £7057.50... anyway, it's still cheap, and I'll contact Bonhams as Paul suggests to see if we can contact the new owner.
Tim Griggs

Tom, I bow to your superior knowledge of the auction world; withdraw, recant, retract and repent.
Murray

Opps that was "Tim" not "Tom" - I repent again
Murray

Well, I must admit to hanging round a few more classic car auctions than is strictly good for me... there are some good cars in there sometimes!

I very nearly bought the Jacobs YB at Goodwood. I got outbid by £500 as I convinced myself I couldnt justify the extra £500 as 1. I know little about YBs 2. the car needed work and I had no idea what it might cost. Of course Im kicking myself for being chicken now! I sprint / Hillclimb an MGF and own and have owned a wide variety of MGs. I knew about this car (did it take part in the Goodwood Revival meeting one year?)but knew little about YBs. At the auction I was very impressed with its history and its file and it had obviouly been used recently in anger. Im a bit bored of my F and fancied doing speed events in something different. However the lack of a cage, a seat with a head restraint, decent brakes and the rest put me off the YB. I guess Im not as brave as Jacobs! I could have bought the car and fitted these things but that would be heresy with such an original motor. Of course I have now realised I could use it for historic road rallying / regularity events and wish I'd bought it. If the new owner is reading this and has a change of heart please post here to let me know. Otherwise if anyone else is thinking of selling their solid and reliable YB please let me know. Don't want concourse but no rust buckets / major money pits please!
