MG MG Y Type - Fan belt alignment

My fan belt seems to fray quite quickly which I put down to the alignment of the water pump, crankshaft and dynamo pulleys not being quite in line. Any tips here and is this something to do with replacement water pumps?
Should there be washers between the dynamo mounting locations and the bolts that secure it?
What fan belt should I use to alleviate this?
D MULLEN

The pulley should be lined up as close as you can get them David. To do this you may need to use pack washers on the generator (dynamo).

Also look to check you have the same groove pattern on all of your pulleys. You can do this primarily by inspection but if in doubt you can by a cheap woodworker's profiler.

My fan belt used to be out of alignment until I mounted the kinked, upper dynamo stay the other way round, mounting the dynamo more to the front.

I had to use washers to fill the gaps.

I notice you have a toothed belt rather than a V shaped one - do you have the standard pulleys?
D MULLEN

My belt isn't flat; it has the normal broad V-profile to fit the standard pulleys, but the 'teeth' enable the belt to bend more easily, thus creating less drag and friction.

It's just a more modern design of the V-belt, I expect it to release AT LEAST 0.001 bhp!

Found this on the web. My belt isn't a toothed belt but is correctly called a notched belt:

"A notched belt has grooves or notches that run perpendicular to the belt’s length, which reduces the bending resistance of the belt. Notched belts can use the same pulleys as cross-section standard V-belts. They run cooler, last longer, and are about 2% more efficient than standard V-belts."
