MG MG Y Type - Fan blades

I have recently refitted the metal fan blades back on my engine - largely because it runs a bit hot. I have painted the edges white so I can see them going round just in case I put my fingers too close...its easily done when you are messing round under the bonnet - has anyone ever fitted plastic ones or ones with a 'band' round the edges etc to make them safer? Any ideas out there...
David Mullen

David-

No, but I did fit a B blade to my TD MKII and it does wonders for cooling.

YB/TDs/TF/etc.

Hi Paul ,

For the uneducated could you tell me what a B blade is .

David A - from an MGB.

As a general note though, a plastic blade will still take your hand off if you stick it in the blades while they are turning with the engine - 45 (or 54) BHP it might be ... forgiving it wont be!

I am running the B fan on my TF, and am pleased with the results. Plan on changing the YB over as well. This is one mod that is easily and completely reverseable.

The only thing is there were 3 different fans in the MGBs over the years. Originally a 3 blade metal fan from 1962 - 1967, then a 7 blade plastic fan from 1967 - 1976, then a four bladed one (with electric motor from 1976 to end of production!

Also, if you remove your fan and either replace it with a B one, or just put it back on again, MAKE SURE you get it the right way round so that it pulls the air through the radiator and doesn't try to push it back out of the front of the car as I know someone did once!! No, not guilty ... but I know who was!

The plastic fan(s) from the Peugeot 205 are easily modified for our use and come in several sizes and blades. A nice excuse to visit that breakersyard you've wanted to go to, but didn't know what for.
Willem van der Veer

I have the 7 blade. While it will still nip your fingers if you are careless, it is more observable. Eliminates the need to paint the fan blades like the nose of a Spit or Mustang.

Safety Fast (As I prepare to mount the YB for the trip to work)

Paul;; Installing a fan blade backwards will not push the air forward. It is just not as effective.
this is due tothe curvature of the blade itself.

I forget what MG my friend was driving at the time - it may even have been a late MG MGB GT where the electric powered fan is mounted in front of the radiator and is designed to PUSH air through the radiator. Suffice to say after refitting it he noticed a distinct lack of cooling but all was revealed on cold day in a jam where he noticed the exhaust of the car in front of him was being pushed back onto itself!

However, the point is, incorrect fitting in terms of orientation will lead to a reduced efficiency!

I agree with Dave's original concern about safety, but just to be contrary, I've been running my Y for the last ten years with half the recommmended blades, as it always seemed overcooled in the winter - the measure of this was that the heater matrix never warmed up properly.

Even in our recent hot summers, the engine has only once boiled - in a 2-hour slow parade procession when the ambient temperature was about 27C (80F)! My point is, before changing the blades for extra cooling, perhaps a radiator flush would achieve the same ends?

Thanks for all the helpful replies - by the way does anyone know an electric fan that fits easily (a 'flat' motor type)- I have all the works off a Kenlowe system I fitted to a Hilman Avenger car I had years ago but the fan motor is too wide to fit between the engine and radiator on the Y.
David Mullen

David, you might consider fixing the Kenlowe in front of the radiator, inside the shell. Not the easiest way but I think it can be done and the casual observer won't notice your modern bodge.....
Willem van der Veer

Not sure of the clearance but a rubber bumpered MGB has both a thermo-switch which you will have to mount in the radiator head, and an electric motor. Watch for rotation and you may need to reverse the fan blade mounting if you are + earth.

Willem vdV has the right idea - mount your electric fan between the front of the radiator and the grill. But first do the Y headlight bar mod then you have the ideal oportunity to make a suitable mounting bracket - works a treat! Cheers Richo YT3208
