MG MG Y Type - Firewall Grommet

Does anyone know of a source for the original type grommet for the wiring harness going from the regulator box to the dashboard. The original had an extended rubber shroud going downwards towards the regulator. All I have been able to find is just a standard rubber grommet.

Bob,

Searched for many a month for this grommet throughout the U.K., whilst restoring my car. Sadly, have found no supplier this side of the globe. If you do find a source I'd like to know. Thanks,

Have you asked Wallace?

Bob- Got some dimensions? you may be able to find something similar from some other vehicle. I happen to know that Vespa scooters use about 5 different shapes and sizes of rubber-shrouded type grommets, and they're all available brand new. There must be something out there for you.

Alternatively you can make your own - carve the shape out of moulding wax, make a plaster mould around it, melt the wax out with steam, and pour in 2-pack silicon rubber. Let it set, smash the plaster mould off (or make the mould in 3 parts if you're especially clever) an Voila! A perfect reproduction part.

Moose- you're a baaaad man.

G,
Dimensions as follows

O-ring section OD - 40mm
ID - 26mm
Shroud section (extending downwards at 45 degree angle) Top extends 35mm from O-ring
Bottom extends 12mm from O-ring
These measurements from my badly deteriorated original, so may be out slightly.
Sounds like I need to practise my craftwork skills.

Alright, I'll chase the mould maker and see if he can make it a priority. Our cars would look neater with that rubber.

Bob- there's an angled grommet on the Vespa which is for the fuel line- it's probably too small though.

Dont lose that perished original- it can be useful for making a mould off.

Good luck!

PS Dental supply companies are a good source of hard modelling wax.
