MG MG Y Type - Fitting a Water Temperature gauge to a Y Type
I would like to fit an auxiliary water temperature gauge to my my MGY. I am sure many of you will have done this before so, any tips on how best to do this modification please? |

Hello Neil, I have installed several of these and they are a real bonus to undrstanding how the cooling system is coping under load. I install mine in the LHS of the cast iron elbow just below the thermostat. You will need a taper gas tap 1/4NPT I think - but it depends on the sender size of course. The elbows are around 3-5mm thick, so you get a healthy few threads and the taper makes it nice & tight. I run the sender wire through a steel sleeeve suspended from the 2 redundant bolts on the side of the rocker cover. This keeps it away from the plug leads and is easy to remove for "concours". A little bit of heat shrink on the wire stops it from fraying at each end of the tubing. The mounting clips are made from spring steel strapping salvaged from an industrial waste bin. Photo attached should make it clear. In the Tourer I mounted the gauge below the dash to the right of the steering column, while in Saloons it can go in the same place or inside the glovebox (sneaky). ![]() |

I fitted one to my Y as well as an oil pressure gauge, a volymeter and a cigar lighter-type socket. You might be interested in the auxiliary board that I fitted below the facia, picture attached. If you wnat more details, email me. Note, the address shown above is wrong. Ican't get the site to update it. It is now @btinternet.com Michael |

Neill I can neither type nor get the site to upload the picture - senile decay I expect. For volymeter read voltmeter, and email me for pictures and details if you want them. I will try to upload one again but it didn't work first time. Michael ![]() |

Michael - love the layout with the octagonal bezels aping the main panel. Please show this panel fitted to the car if you can. Tony, those bolts are for the Home market MG Y and YB air cleaner support. Only redundant on export models and Y/Ts sadly but again, a very tidy instalation. Paul |

Michael, Did you make the bezels yourself or did you use some other octagonal object? |
