MG MG Y Type - floorboard chassis packing
Evening All Some time ago there was a discussion as to the best material to use around the floorboards and on chassis rails. I cant find it so can anyone tell me what was the conclusion , if there was one , in the end. I seem to remember talk of strips of rubber sheet and also self adhesive neoprene ??? Or am I remembering it all wrong . Any thoughts please. Thanks a lot John B Y4424 |

I believe originally felt was used, but I have used (3mm) thin rubber strips. I marked the underside of the floorboards along the out edges, tunnel support and chassis rails, then tacked/ stapled the rubber strips to the floorboards. Ensured the floorboards are fully bolted down otherwise they slap when car goes over bumps (speed bumps in particular). Stuart |

Thanks Stuart. I've actually got a piece of leather which was originally nailed to the floorboard above the chassis outrigger, and in surprisingly good condition . I was thinking of using rubber strips as you did , it was just at the back of my mind i thought someone suggested high density neoprene with its self adhesive and was wondering how well this worked . John,
The perimeter edges of the front and rear floorboard sections had 1"X1/16" felt packing between the floorboards and the metal supports. I recovered several orig sections when I restored YB0952. I do not recall if they were wool or synthetic. Wollies can supply a suitable replacement. The L&R rear floorboard sections also had three 1/4" rectangular CORK packing pieces between the floorboards and main chassis member/outrigger. See Appendix Three Plates 5 & 6 (pgs 255-6) of Lawrence's LTBY's. I fabricated replacements by glueing several layers of cork gasket sheeting together to achieve the requisite thidckness. There is also a 1/4" rubber pad between the R front floorboard section and the chassis pedal box. I believe Paul Barrow can supply a replacement. Identical felt packing is also used between the upper face of the floorboards and the metal transmission and propshaft covers and between the toeboards and chassis supports. Rocky |

Thanks for that Rocky . I found some strips of felt under the prop shaft cover when I stripped it down .Original and very flat. Think I shall have to experiment a bit . The outside rail ie top of the sill, has been welded both sides and the rear lip one one side so thicknesses of packing will vary a touch. Thanks again John B |

Avoid using felt - it retains moisture and creates rust. Use either "chassis packing" or closed cell polyurethane foam sprayed in Lanolin (it repels water) and prevents rust. Tony The Classic Workshop |
