MG MG Y Type - Front Hood Timber wrapping
Last week I went on a club run (our first since the easing of the lockdown) in the rain in the YT. I got wet from water coming through a 3-4mm gap between the timber and windscreen top. My hood is 2nd hand and the wood is not covered, whilst the flap down the front doesn't sit flat against the windscreen.
I decided to check LTBYs and found a photo showing the timber rail covered in hood material (pg 150), but I am unsure if the rail is wrapped seperately or the material is part of the hood. Could someone please clarify? Does the rail have any padding under the material? Also photos would be appreciated. cheers Stuart |

The flap is usually part of a piece of fabric that is wrapped around the timber. The flap is fitted so that it is set against the windscreen then wrapped around the timber and a piece of sealing rubber attached to the underside of the timber. Even done this way it can leak through gaps between the fabric and top of the windscreen.
Since its a job done when a new hood is installed, try and put a piece of "closed cell" neoprene anong the underside of the timber where it meets the windscreen. The type of sealing rubber that is used to seal truck caps to the truck bed sides does a good job. It is usually self adhesive as well. allowing you to get the rubber in position. Tack it down as well. Should solve the leak. Hope this helps.... CR. |

CR, thank you for your reply. I have a length of Ash which I will trim down to shape and use this with a different and lighter hood I have. When I attach this new timber rail to hood frame I will adjust the attachments so I get a good fit against the windscreen. I would still appreciate a photo or 2 of the hood rail from inside and outside the car. cheers Stuart |

Stuart, You will need some of this to seal the gap between the header rail and the windscreen frame to keep out the rain - it's even the right colour to suit the Salt & Pepper !. Available from Bunnings. Cheers Tony The Classic Workshop ![]() |

I will take a picture of the area on a unmolested hood frame that still has the original covering, although faded. The hood is in shreds, but the rail and rail cover is there with the rubber strip under the fabric. ... CR |

Stuart, Send me an email and I will send you some pictures of the detail. ... CR |

Stuart I may be a bit late - see attachment regarding the front hood timber covering. I had to search through my "old" pictures. Anton ![]() ![]() |

Well well Anton, we now know where in the world you go for holidays - a tropical sandy beach perhaps ?. |

Well, the lock down is in my way to the tropical fun.... Attached please find a photo of a beige TD Hood detail which to my knowledge is identical to the YT and served me as a sample. On the black detail shot, you can see the rubber strip, I fitted between the wood and the covering. I opted for a strip of soft solid rubber because I worry that sponge rubber would get wet and might start to rot. Anton ![]() ![]() |
