MG MG Y Type - front hubs grease-seal

the drivers side front wheel rim has a pattern of radiating grease from the hub. I have taken off the wheel for cleaning, extracted the split pin, undo the castle nut (right hand thread) underneath the retaining disc there is NO o-ring, Ah well that's the reason for the leak, BUT on checking the other side which does not leak/spray grease I find there is no o-ring there either.

should there be an o-ring? why would one side leak and not the other?

Is there as much grease in the hub?

Anyway, to solve your problem I have a bag full of the right sized O rings to eliminate your problem. Drop me a note off line with your snail mail address and we can sort something out.

Michael, this happened to me and I found that the bearing was running hot and needed replacement.
Bryan

There should also be an O ring (Original Equipment was a fat felt washer). The O Ring has to be correctly dimensioned so that it sits properly in the groove. I used to have this problem and since I fitted the O Rings it has ceased.

If your bearings need replacing, you might consider fitting sealed bearings as I did. This will solve any grease leaking out and (alas) will also eliminate two greasing spots from you maintenace list.

SKF numbers for the YA/T are:
SKF6305-2RS1 (the 2RS1 denotes the double sealing) is the bigger inner bearing.
SKF6304-2RS1 is the smaller outer bearing.

Any machine or car partseller can "read" these numbers for their own make.

paul,
what is the number of the o-ring?

Goodness knows - sorry Scott - I bought a huge bag full ages ago they owe me about $2 a shot I know that much :-)

re-assembled both sides with a rubber 'o' ring in the off-side.
did not put one in the nearside.

went for a half hour run and the near side is still fine and the offside not leaking but running hot so will take Bryan's advice and replace the bearing.
