MG MG Y Type - Front screen pillar repair

Has anyone attempted the famous screen pillar repair on a YB DIY? Before I start cutting away I would appreciate any help on the procedure. Both my front pillars are shot. Thanks.
M SMITH

I was just looking back at old thread and didn’t see a response to your problem. Tell me how did you get on and have you effected a repair? I assume there was a separation of the join of the roof surface running into the vertical pillar. Any pics?

Hi there Mick

Can you please post some pictures of what you are looking at and why you are needing to repair it? They will be helpful to see what you have and to figure out how much you need to do.

I presume you are having to do this because the drain tubes rotted out on you?

Another Y-Typer in South Australia has replaced the driver's side front pillar a few years ago - his YA was badly damaged in an accident.

I supplied a pillar from a wreck that was rusted out and beyond salvage, but had sound roof & pillars.

I will follow up & see how the repair went.

Is this the type of damage you mean??

Great picture John - thank you.

Hi Mick
Is that what you have?

prior to this repair the pillar was sprayed inside with an anti rust agent and then two layers of fibre glass this is not the perfect way but barring driving under a very low bridge!! the pillars are still quite strong

Do you have a picture of the finished product John?

This would probably be worth writing up a fuller report and us posting it on Hints and Tips. What do you think John? Would you like to send me something?

Sorry All for not replying pressure of work. I will post some pictures as I haven't had time to spend on MXY
since Christmas. Thank you all for the replies. Mick

Hi all, as promised pictures of the pillars on MXY. The rust inside has caused the pillars to swell and distort the outside surface also the guttering has broken away where holes have formed. (not a pretty sight)
I intend to cut a 10" section out of each pillar leaving a slight front edge on the new section to reconnect the guttering.
I'm having a problem with the uploading of the pictures at the moment! I will send them later if I can, in the meantime thanks for your posts.
Mick.

Hi Mick,
Is your gutter as as bad as this ?Both sides of this car the same, repaired again with the good old fibreglass and fibreglass tape been done a year now and still holding together.

Hi John
Your gutters are far worse then mine. However, my pillars are distorted due to the rust within and I think the only way is surgery. Paul Barrow is kindly going to post the pictures for me as I had a problem my end.(not the site)
Mick.
