MG MG Y Type - Fuel Cap Breathing Washer

Hi all

In April, I started a thread regarding the ventilating arrangement of Y-Type fuel tanks. Especially about the breathing washer within the petrol cap. At the time, I also mentioned that I would need to look for a "decent" replacement of my rusted species.
I was out of luck in Switzerland and thus, I extend my search globally: Does anyone please have for me such a washer, as shown in the picture with the yellow arrow? This photo shows a mate's fuel cap and breathing washer with a "hat brim like" outer surround.

At the washer of my car, shown in the second attachment, the brim has rusted away. Because of this, the outer edge of the washer presses too hard into the rubber gasket, thus restricting the air stream. I worry that with time, no more air will flow at all.

So please, check your goodies boxes and see if you can find a breathing washer for me.

cheers
Anton

Hello Rocky

You are my hero, thank you very much.

If I am not mistaken, you already offered the two links to "from the frame up in your answer to my then request.

At the time, I unfortunately could not open the link that showed a photo and order number of the ribbed washer. But that is history now, and I will order such a washer (probably) tomorrow :o)

I'll keep you posted

again, thank you
Anton

Anton,

Sorry you are having trouble opening the pages I cited. Try starting at

https://fromtheframeup.com

His site is thorough and easy to negotiate.

Doug Pelton specializes in TC parts/restorations. As you well know, MANY parts of our YA/B/T's are shared with contemporary TC/D/F's. Or is that the other way around? He,he!

I have NO financial connections to Doug or any of his related companies. While coming on to the T Series supplier scene more rescently than MOSS, NTG, Abingdon, Naylor, Edney, etc, he has produced/made available MANY parts unavailable previously.

Octagonally,

Rocky

I've ordered today :o)

Hi Rocky

The ripped washer and brass spacer arrived yesterday in Switzerland (from the USA).

The spares cost USD 24.- and shipping and handling cost USD 24.- as well.

This might sound expensive, but it saved me from having the ripped washer made locally.

Again, many thanks and a bold New MG Year

Anton.

Glad your bits arrived safely from Phoenix, AZ. Sorry about the USD/Swiss Franc conversion and postage rates.

I an thrilled to know costs are not an impediment to your restoring your cars to their original conditions.

You can now assenble your YT filler cap per factoy design. The fuel system will breathe/vent as intended w/o creating pressure or a vacuum!

On a totally different subject: I am a bit Swiss myself. One of my great-grand-fathers,Theophile Helg, was born in Schwarzenbach,SG. He graduated from Heidelberg University in 1875 and taught as a Professor of Music at the Benedictene Abbies in Einsiedeln,Schwyz; St Meinarad,Indiana and Rosaryville, Gessen,Louisiana,USA.

Hope you inherited some Swiss Banker DNA :o)

On a different subject: on my search for a ribbed washer, I came across a drawing of and exploded view of a gas cap.

Do you know where this drawing is hiding, and if you do, can you please let me have the link - or a scan of the exploded view? I would like to add it to my personal technical notes.

cheers

P.S.: I do have the page with the gas cap assembly sequence of "from the frame up"....

Anton,

I am not familiar with the diagram of the gas cap you reference. I've tried several google searches without luck. Sorry!

This has been really interesting for me-
My car which had been in a shed since 1959 has a different cap design, the seal is in the filler neck and the cap itself has a spring loaded brass bell type piece that seals against the cork seal--It may have been changed at some time but I doubt as the car was an original/dismantled/crashed car before that date. it does look like a TD/TF cap--but why/how

Merry Christmas, Willie!

Trust you are enjoying delightful Summer weather with family and friends on the north Tasmanian coast.

Your fuel tank cap is the same as the one on my YB. The main body is clad in polished stainless steel, not chrome plated brass.

I believe Anton's cap (identical to the one on my TC) was the type fitted to TB/C's, YA/T's, and early TD's.

Yours was fitted to later TD's, YB's and TF's. I do not recall ever reading when the change occured. The fitting/sealing design on the tank body was changed to match the caps and their different internal parts.

Can anyone provide further insight to Willie's question?

Merry Christmas Rocky.

Had a fairly quiet Christmas day with immediate family, very relaxing day.
Early Summer here is always a bit of a mixed brew with low to mid 20's temps and we tend to get plenty of wind storms and scattered rain until late January, then it tends to settle and stays good through to Easter-ish'

I reckon you've nailed it with my cap being a YB cap.
I've had a good look at it and yes it's a stainless cover crimped on -- problem solved
When I found the car it was just a rolling chassis, no body tub, but boxes of parts, doors, windows etc.
I've had a chat with the ex owner's son and he thinks that his dad (rip) built one car out of two smashed ones, so what I got was probably the leftovers of both a YA and YB. It's been a long job but nearly ready to go. -It's different, would describe it, couldn't find a body for it so got stuck in and built an aluminium open sports car body for him along the lines of maybe a P type. Came up ok but the purists are going to hate it, but it was the best I could do with what I had.
All the best.

Hi Willie, That chassis in your last post is a YA, not a YB. The YB had no rear panhard rod, 15" wheels and a different differential. I would be keen to know the chassis number if you can still read it on the passenger side dumb iron?

Correct Tony, i knew the chassis was YA, that's where I'd become a little confused with the makeup of the fuel filler cap, but Rocky has identified it so problem solved.

Friends of the sun

I finally fitted the new "From the frame up" parts to my YT fuel/petrol cap - adhering to Rob Ades guideline of the 6 o'clock / 12 o'clock fitting instructions of April 3 2024.

The cap looks and feels good now and I look forward to next spring's outing.

Thank you all for your assistance.
