MG MG Y Type - Fuel Pipe Route
Im in the process of fitting a new copper fuel pipe. I have read everything in LTBYs about the route but could do with a photo of the pipe where it is fixed by a clip to the inside edge of the left hand body stiffener brace. I assume that the clip is attached to the end of the bolt which fixes the top end of the brace? I have gone thru my collection of engine bay shots but this area is always obscured by the Jackall pump or coil, etc. I have a YA though I guess this fixing should be the same on all models? Thanks Rob |

Not sure if this helps as this is a YB but it is probably the same. Page 70 of LTBYs does show fuel line on a 1949 Y but not close enough to confirm clip. The P clip on mine is attached directly to top of stay tube and stiffener bracket. Photo attached Best regards, Mick ![]() |

Hi Mick, Thats exactly what I needed thanks.... The explanation of this fixing in LTBYs is a little confusing....but a picture paints a thousand words. Looks like you've got new copper too? Thanks again Rob |

Hi Rod, copper line from tank to pump nicely polished even along chassis! I have lagged with heat insulating tape the run behind the cylinder head as it can get quite warm here and there was a suspicion that it could cause vaporisation in the fuel line before petrol reaches the pump. Not sure if that is true but I have no problems with fuel starvation etc. despite the really warm (by UK standards!) summer temps, Best regards, Mick |

Hi Rob Just to confirm fixing- see pic. Keith ![]() |

On one of the rusty Y's that I have wrecked over the years, the fuel line was routed behind the battery box to avoid being close to the rear of the cylinder head. Could be a good idea if vapour lock is an issue where you live. |

Hi Guys, looks like Keith's car has some insulation on fuel line behind cylinder head, Regards, Mick |

Hi all. Yes- the fuel line is insulated very simply with a rubber tube, slit and slid onto the line. When I put it on as an experiment 10 years ago, I was then going to paint it the same as body colour - perhaps one day. Whilst on the subject of fuel lines, you will see in the picture that I use a longer braided pipe from the pump to the carb. This takes it away from the main heat source, although I also have a heat shield fitted. This combination of anti-vapourisation measures has stood the test of an Italian summer rally and just a few weeks ago in France, a temperature of 33 degrees C. Hope this helps. Keith ![]() |
