MG MG Y Type - Fuel pump

Another novice question I'm afraid. I've just fitted a new fuel pump to my MG YA, as the previous one was non-standard, without the integral filter. Although I haven't driven the car yet with the new pump, I have started the engine and it seems to work. The only thing is, I notice that it seems to click away constantly, rapidly at first and then more slowly, with or without the engine running. My question is, is this normal or do I need to adjust something? The old pump only clicked away when I first turned on the ignition, or if it was having trouple getting fuel through. Many thanks. Andrew - What kind of a pump did you install? If it was a SU fuel pump, it should stop ticking once the float bowls are full. If it doesn't, look for fuel coming out of the overflow tubes or for an air leak at one of the fittings on the inlet side of the pump. If you installed a non SU fuel pump, the constant running may or may not be normal. Some of the pumps, such as the Facet, continue to tick even when the float bowls are full and there is no air leak, which can be rather annoying.

Thanks David. It is an SU pump as per the original spec. When you turn on the ignition from cold it does, as you say, tick away rapidly at first and then stop once the float bowls are full. However, once you start the engine it ticks away again, quite rapidly. Logic tells me it should do this, but the old one was very quiet in comparison. I'm planning to take the car out then, so I'll see if the noise is still noticeable with the car in motion. Thanks again for your help. Andrew

The pump on my YB (original type, but of more recent manufacture), ticks rapidly filling the carb, then once about every 30 seconds with the engine not running. when the engine runs, I don't hear the ticking. My pump is mounted on rubber to the body. Is yours metal-to-metal? I guess then more of the ticking will be audible while you drive.

I'm pleased to report that the fuel pump has quietened down now after a few short runs. I notice that the (new) coil still gets quite hot. Maybe new HT leads (when they arrive) will alleviate this. Otherwise I might have to consider a new radiator as mine appears to be the original one.

I guess you have tried totally backflushing it?

If that hasnt worked then maybe a recore. However,I am not sure this will assist the coil much.
