MG MG Y Type - Fuel sender float.

My YA fuel sender works well, but the float has a couple of rust holes. My first thought is to clean it back to bare metal and either re-tin the damaged areas or the entire surface; alternatively, is there a modern flexible sealant that will survive long term exposure to fuel?
The archives talk of buying the reproductions, which is another option, but I'd like to explore salvaging the original float before I go down that track.
PS - I have a new stainless fuel tank copied from the original, so rust shouldn't be a problem in future.
Thanks all. John.

You may be able to have success tinning the float where the rust damage is, but success is not great. I was lucky to salvage a float off another sender unit, and installed it on the rod, by drilling a hole on the ceter of each end and putting the rod through and re soldering. Another option may be to purchase a new brass float and install the same way.

You could also buy a plastic float - no one will know it's not original John !.

Hi John. If you want to go the sealant route a product call red-kote a fuel tank sealer will do the job.

Clean the rust off and use Araldite or other epxoxy glue to seal the holes - it is fuel & oil proof and if you heat the item up a little the glue will dry clear.

Some glass mat can be use to bridge larger holes.

Thanks all - yes Tony, I have a few plastic floats squirreled away, but hope to avoid mucking about with removing the arm, fitting new float, etc ... If I can! So I like the sound of Rob's or Chris' suggestions as the first line of attack.
Tony - like you I am now a retired old fart with more time on my hands and an endless list of jobs/challenges waiting in the garage. I barely know what to tackle first - so to avoid the issue, I've ordered up materials to extend to 5 bays and a bit of mezzanine for storage.
Did someone say something about some kind of virus somewhere ...?
Wishing all MG friends good health.
John.
