MG MG Y Type - Fuel Tank Padding Replacement

I asked a question a while back about the purpose of the felt padding on the fuel tank. Paul replied that it is there to reduce drumming sounds while driving.

Does this drumming sound come from the fuel tank or from the boot floor panel? Is it supposed to fit firmly against the boot floor?

I'm deciding whether or not to replace this felt piece as I reinstall the fuel tank. As NTG doesn't even sell the part, I'm assuming it doesn't really do much of anything.

It would have been to reduce drumming vibration transmission. I dont know that it would really do that much in reality though - maybe I am wrong??

If you want to put something there I would suggest getting some standard noise insulation felt and heavily waterproofing it, or sound deadening material. Maybe that builder's expanding foam may do the trick when the tank is in place????? but be careful to mask the tank top gap before using it and clean up any dribbles.

However, before you go down that route, check to see if you have a gap between the trunk floor and the top of the gas tank and if you can position the tank on its 3 mounting points so that it isnt in contact. Sods Law says that it will contact wherever you dont put any padding and cannot see!

Does this mean you have relented and decided to keep the YB after all? I emailed you to see what price you were looking at but never heard back so I hope it is the case!

I don't remember an email from you, Paul. I hope I didn't delete it accidentally! I haven't decided 100% and I'm doing everything I can to figure out how to keep it (storage space is the issue) but time will soon tell. However I'm not selling anything with the fuel tank sitting on a work bench, so I need to at least complete the project.

The tank is freshly painted in POR15 and sparkling clean inside. The brass manufacturer's tag nicely polished and ready to be hidden from view for another 55 years. The sender unit is rebuilt and calibrated, so all I have to do is get the hoses and grommets from NTG and I'm good to go. :)

I wish there were a US-based supplier for this stuff.

Really depends on what you need Steve. Many vendors ARE this side - Abingdon Spares LLC are a good source.

Steve-
I often use scotch brite or other similar pads for non heat area padding, as it does not absorb water and will breathe out any that accumulates.

Just a thought. I do not get too many. Why not trying BRASS WOOL pads in gobs to absorb or eliminate the drumming. They will not rust nor hold moisture. Spray them with undercoating just prior to remounting the tank.
