MG MG Y Type - Fuses: what Amps
In my YT's regulator two fuses with different Amp values are used. The one on the off side of the regulator reads 35Amps, whilst the one on the near side reads 25 Amps. Can anyone please tell me what the correct Amperage would be? I could not find any specifications in the workshop manual. Anton Piller, Switzerand YT 4220 ![]() |

The main power fuse should be the 35 amp fuse. Just remember the 35 amp is a surge 35 amp. Of the normal fuse found locally here I use a 20 amp fuse. Is the 25 amp fuse an original type fuse? I am not sure of the different ratings of fuses but. the originals were rated at their surge capacity. Memory is not good, but I think a 35 amp fuse blowes at 17 amp continuous. Others will know for sure. C.R. |

Back in the 90s I received this Lucas service sheet from John Lawson from memory, it shows 2 x 35amp fuses, which my car has.

I concur with Steven - Two x 35amp. It's in the Workshop Manual somewhere ?. Tony |

Dear C.R., Steven and Tony
Thank you for your replies. The 35 Amp fuse is an original old type with pointed ends - the 25 Amp one is of the modern (slightly longer) type. I apreciate the copy of the Lucas equipment booklet that proves that two 35 Amp fuses came with the car. Plus two more of tem for spares, clipped onto the underside of the pacelite cover. I will follow up on this topic with a local auto electrician and keep you posted about his opinion regarding "surge or slow", with modern fuses. cheers Anton |

Anton, Some information on the fuses. https://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et102.htm ... CR |

The Owner's manual (Page 80 - Home and Export Editions) says 2 25 Ampere fuses. The Y Workshop Manual also says 25 Amperes on page N-5. Somewhat confusingly though the LUCAS Equipment list on page 7 quotes 2 35 Ampere fuses. Neither the YB handbook nor the YB Workshop manual are helpful and neither gives a rating. Paul |

Dear CR, Paul and others Thank you for the very interesting and helpful MG A fuses article and the confusing Workshop / Lucas booklet quotes. My auto electrician and a couple of knowledgeable XPAG friends all recommend to use modern 20 Amp fuses. They consider it safe, especially because I am using a new (tailor-made by Auto-Sparks in UK) braided wiring harness with my YT. Anton P.S.: hope you like my little work bench within the cockpit.... ![]() |

Anton, That is exactly how i do my dash work on the YT and TD. If only the more modern cars gave such access. .. CR |

Hi ,The headlight today have a lot more wattage plus extra spotlights will have changed the fuse rating needed. |

Love the stand in the car for the dash. I know it is easy to knock one up but save me designing it can you email me dimensions (preferably in inches) as I am about to remount my YA one. Paul |

Bob II'll take this into consideration. I am using H4 Halogen Headlamps (with adaptors) and LEDs within my spot lamps. Thank you for the input. Anton ![]() |

Paul You have to be patient. The photo is a couple of years old and I have to dig up the little work bench. Anton |

Hi Paul I will send you details of the double-decker work bench per separate mail and want to ask you, to please publish them on "Hints & Tips", so others might benefit from it as well :o) ![]() |
