MG MG Y Type - Garage

For those who wondered what this is about reference Safety Fast Y section article Nov '12
Jerry,
I've considered planning to build double (WIDTH not LENGTH) heated garage estimated cost region of £20k.
Personally if I were you if you get opportunity to get decent garage it'll make DIY much easier, the issue with single width garage is if you have to work outside the garage and hit problem which invariably you will, if it involves taking wheels off may mean the car has to stay outside or awkwardly move back into the dry.
Whatever your choice good luck

I haven't had my SF yet! I entirely agree with your comments and 'have been there etc' and experienced all the difficulties you raised. When we move (all being well) I will have a reasonable sized garage with an attached workshop and car port (which I will enclose at the earliest opportunity). It's not heated but I will look to acquiring a thermostatically controlled space heater.

I wonder whether its worthwhile fitting a car lift. There are one or two reasonably priced examples around. If anyone has used one any feedback would be gratefully received.

All the best

Wouldnt be without mine Jerry

Jerry,

Paul's right, I wouldn't be without mine either. At my time of life, lying on my back on a cold concrete floor has lost it's appeal!

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but do bear in mind the available headroom before you decide what to buy. Lifts come in all shapes & sizes, the smallest I've seen giving about 30 inches clearance below the vehicle but that still has the roof of a YA/YB about 7 feet 6 inches above the floor. At the other end of the scale a full size garage lift set at a comfortable height to stand underneath needs a clear height inside the building of about 10 feet to clear the roof of the car.

Having said all that, my advice is to go for it and install whatever will fit in your building.

I bought my lift on a well known internet auction site for a very reasonable price, the best money I've spent in years.

Hi Bill

Thanks for the note. We have now moved and the garage and workshop are in use as I have been getting the YT scrubbed up for the Classic Car Show at the NEC this forthcoming weekend. The workshop is full of boxes as is much of the house! The garage was built to store a Dodge Camper van and so has a high roof.

The width is 4.1m and the length 6.3m. The attached workshop is approx 3.5m x 3.7m and there is a car port which will need a solid floor together with doors and that is 5.8m x 4m. So quite a bit of usable space. The YT and the MGA fit in the garage with space to spare - almost enough for a T type cross ways!

Could you give me an example of the type of car lift you have - manufacturer etc - please?

All the best

Hi jerry,
Sounds like you have got yourself a great workshop, I am a little envious of all that space. I will see you some time Saturday at the show.

Hi Jerry,

It's a Bradbury 799, a full size four post lift that came from a garage that was closing down. Most, like mine, are 3 phase but will operate happily on a standard domestic 240 volt supply through a convertor. The platform lifts to a maximum of about 6 feet above floor level.

Bradbury seem to be one of the most popular manufacturers, and spares for all models are readily available.

A lot of the lifts you see advertised are "wheels free" ie the car can be raised with its wheels dangling in space. Mine doesn't have this facility, and for DIY use I don't think you need it.

I've probably taken up more than my share of Bulletin Board time with this topic (I know, I should get out more often....) so if you need any more info. please email me direct.

One of the advantages of moving back to NZ is space! We now have a garage with room (tightish squeeze) for three cars and the small yacht and kayak fit across the back. See picture. And a work bench and storage for car bits, TF hardtop hangs on the wall - all good!

Does the TF leak enough oil to warrant that much cardboard? Just beacause it has an MG badge doesn't mean ....

@ Ian - very droll! On the floor was a convenient place to store all the large cardboard appliance boxes. They will ultimately see service under the YA.

They say that clutter always increases to fill the available space but those like me who suffer from being an eclectic hoarder it has got out of hand. My garage believe it or not could accommodate 4 cars but years of never throwing anything away has resulted in that I can hardly get in the door. The Anglia aquired in 1967 is having its rear suspension and axle overhauled. The YA purchased in 1960 is in mostly running order, where as the 2 birth 16' sloop on the left which I built in the 60s is fairly sea worthy but needs a new set of sails. To the right is stacked 110ft sectioned 3.5" gauge railway track built in 1980s. The locomotive a 0-6-0 tank engine I built in the 1970s is dismantled for boiler check, new seals and piston rings. The second loco a 4-4-0 American type is waiting for a cab and fittings to complete its construction. I warn all you youngsters of my miss spent life otherwise like me you will spend your retirement under a restless curse. Is that the Wife calling? Yes dear, I'm coming right now to fix the back gate and dripping tap!

Bryan,

How true you are! My garage too is in the same state, for the same reasons not wanting to throw out stuff for the "Just in case" scenario
