MG MG Y Type - Gear selector spring wanted

As you can see from attached photo, I'm in need of a gearselectorhandle spring.
It worked in this broken state but I'd rather put back a whole spring.

Who has one to spare please?

The Y Register shop sell these springs, only £8 45 we have had them made to the original spec. Don't buy one from the Octagon shop as they supply a flat section spring which is meant for T Types.

Thanks Peter,

I've ordered one and am now in trepidation for the quote on the postage...

Maybe I'll have to order some bonnet buffers to recover some of the cost? :-)

These are also available from our own Tony Slattery via http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/stores/classicwshop.shtml - the original developer of these springs.

OK, I received the very well made new spring from the Y-register and the postage was an acceptable under 4 GBP, so it is quite a bit less expensive than the one from Tony.

The old spring in it's broken state was a pig to remove, but that was nothing compared to the fight that the new one gave. Would that be that it was a pigger to fit?

My son and I finally succeeded by using a big valve spring compressor.

How do you fit this spring?
Willem van der Veer

Springs made to the correct specification are not difficult to fit, provided you follow the instructions included with my springs.

It is difficult to manufacture anything in Australia and compete in the worldwide marketplace, however if we fail to support our local manufacturers, we will in the future be unable to make anything ourselves.

Monetary exchange rates have been moving quite a lot recently, which has a negative impact on AUD pricing.

I bought mine from Tony - no problems fitting it Willem. I have no experience of alternate suppliers though.

I'd like to start with apologizing for my rudeness in comparing the prices of two totally different suppliers. That was unnecessary.

But I'm still very curious about the correct way to fit this spring. Am I missing something? The old spring was also very stiff and thus hard to remove. The stiffness of the new spring seems to be spot-on with the one removed.

To fit the spring I slid the selector rod in the housing, compressed the spring with the ring on it and slid through the split pin.
Although very simple to write down, it proved to be difficult to remove and fit.
Again, maybe I'm using the wrong method, but I would very much appreciate your comment on the method used by me.
Willem van der Veer

I fitted one of our springs recently and must admit I failed to do it on my own trying various G cramps and a valve compressor. I eventually used two hammer shafts to compress the spring while a friend slipped the split pin in.
Mike Silk says he has a spare housing and will experiment with the best way of fitting the spring so that we can inform future customers.
Thanks for bringing the problem to our attention.

We have now included instructions on how to fit the spring in the listing for it in our shop.
