MG MG Y Type - Gearbox Bearer Bracket

By coincidence, I found out that the metal housing of the Gearbox Bearer Bracket of my Y is drilled "off center" by 6mm or 1/4 inch to the left. This might be the reason, that sometimes the right hand side of the tunnel is sometimes touching the gearbox. Check how far to the left to the edge, the hole in the left ear is drilled. Before, I am going to rectify the position of the two 1/4" threaded holes, I would like to verify that the gearbox bearer bracket should be symmetrical.I'll send an additional photo to better explain the setup. Thank you, Anton

The distance between the two visible holes is 200mm. It clearly can be seen that the big hole in the middle is off center. Can anyone please verify that this is wrong? Cheers,Anton, YT 4220

Pete

Thank you. The picture clearly shows thet the outer holes of the "ears" are off-center. Funny!

It is not the big hole in the center, but rather the two outer holes of the "ears".^A^AAnton

Hi Anton, Look at NTG mounting bracket it's the same as yours. Regards, Brian H

Could it have been fitted the wrong way round? that might account for the gearbox touching the tunnel. Come to think if it, I'm not sure which round mine was fitted!

The front engine mounting holes in the cross member are offset so that the engine sits to the left a bit so I would think the gearbox would need to be to the left as well
I'd say Pete's is around the right way if the top of the pic. is towards the front of the car----And your's Anton, if the arrows are pointing forward , needs turning around , then you will gain some clearance in the tunnel on the rhs

This part is not symmetrical & there is a right way to fit it.

The holes that are offset carry the angle iron frames that support the tunnel & inner floor edge. As Anton has discovered, the tunnel will not be central over the driveshaft if you fit it the wrong way round.

Unfortunately, this will require at least new floor panels on one side to fix. As we say here - bugger !.

Thank you Gentlemen - much obliged. Once, I've put everything back into place and check that it all fits as it should, I'll keep you posted. I think, I found out why the gearbox sometimes touched the RH inside of the tunnel....

Friends

Never too old to learn, a found out that the two rhombic rubber blocks that fit into the rear gearbox bearer bracket are not symmetrical.
I only found out, after having taken them out of the car and checking them.

The attachd photo shows a differnce in hight of 5mm - just imagine how that tilts your engine.

Now, after putting the rubbers back the correct way, the powr unit fits nice and straight with ample place within the gearbox tunnel. And I am glad, I did not have to make up new floor boards :o)
