MG MG Y Type - Gearbox cover

having just done an engine refurbishment which required the removal of the gearbox cover I am now wondering whether this goes on top of the floor boards or underneath. On removal it was on top but it strikes me that it would be easier to remove just the floorboard if it was underneath. Could this be how it was originally designed?

From memory it is on top

Thanks to both of you. It would appear that it was correct after all.

If you put the gearbox cover under the floorboards, the propshaft will rub on the GB cover !.

Don't ask me how I know this, but I will reveal I made that discovery in 1991 !.

Plus there is a thin layer of felt under the propshaft tunnel ...I never knew that until I was told by John Jebb.

Under the cover Dave? Do you mean that there is, or was, a layer of felt between the gearbox and cover vainly held on by a slowly decaying glue layer which is always threatening to fail and cast it to the winds or, if you are unlucky, allowing it to get twisted up round a rapidly (relatively) revolving propshaft?

The gearbox cover goes on top and the propshaft tunnel goes underneath the floorboards (from memory).
