MG MG Y Type - Gearbox finishes

I am in the process of refurbishing/rebuilding some of my Y gearboxes, and after stripping out and cleaning, all of them have had an orange coloured paint finish both inside and outside of the housings, (under the MG red finish on the outside). With the obvious exception of the bell housings which were not painted. I have a feeling that I might know what it is, but just to check I took a couple of parts into two so called, 'automotive paint experts' and neither could identify this undercoat paint finish. Can anyone put my mind at rest and give a positive identity to this finish, as I would like to make sure, before I do anything stupid, that I am applying something that will not promptly fail once the gearboxes are reinstalled and in use on the cars? There is nothing worse than having to do a job twice.

I understood that a product called GLYPTOL was used on the internals of both engines and gear boxes. This helped seal the porous castings.
I also have been wrong on many occasions so if anybody has more info please chime in.

As a matter of interest how much does it cost to rebuild a Y gearbox these days?
David Mullen

Thanks Sandy. I thought it might be Eastwoods Glyptal, but I did not think the product had been around that long. The good news is that Frosts sell it in England. So many thanks.
With regard to costs, I have just completed rebuilding the first box, and replacing the common wear parts such as all bearings, springs, spacer washers, ball bearings, but not major componants such as layshafts, gears etc, and by picking and choosing the cheapest sources by comparing prices, it has cost me about £160.00. (This also does not include the cost of cleaning and painting or replacing any of the clutch componants). I have stripped out two more and I am glad I did as the bearings were all in poor condition, with the front bearing on all three completely unfit for purpose, one for instance having only half the rollers left in place. As an aside we did the usual trick of using a jubilee clip to hold in the ball bearings and springs when re-assembling the sincro mesh, but it was not like many other boxes and this sincro rebuild process still proved to be awkward, what I thought was going to be a 5 min job using the jubilee clip took an hour or more.

Hi Neil,
Did you replace all the needle rollers and if so, where did you purchase them from. Many thanks.
Keith D Herkes

Keith,
I priced up the needle rollers, (both types that are in the box), at both Moss Europe and NTG. You probably are allready aware that both of these companies have web sites and you can download their catalogues and price lists. There are other suppliers such as Brown and Gammon I believe, and I am sure that other enthusiasts can probably list more. In the event I decided not to replace these rollers as they were in pretty good order and were not particularly cheap. These were the only 'bearing parts' that I did not replace. (This may not however be the case with the other boxes I am rebuilding. I still have to go through the parts I have stripped out).
Hope that this helps.
Regards,
Neil.
