MG MG Y Type - Gearbox mountings

I have been investigating the gearbox mountings on my YB. The car generally drives well, but judders when I reverse up my drive, so I decided to have a look at the gearbox mountings while I had the floorboards removed for another job. Unfortunately, the wrong mounting has been fitted - a single mounting, centrally positioned rather than the 2 rubber blocks it should have. To achieve this, part of the casing has been removed - the part that the bolt that ties the gearbox down fixes to. You can see this in the attached photos.

I don't want to replace the gearbox, which works well. Ideally, I would like to fit the correct rubber blocks but find another way to hold the gearbox down. One possibility is to put a bolt through each of the 2 lugs on the gearbox casting that rest on the rubber blocks. I could drill through the rubber blocks so that the bolts could pass through to the cradle they sit in. The bolts could be very lightly tightened and isolated with rubber washers. There are already holes drilled in the lugs on the gearbox casting which would enable this (you can see the holes in the photos.
If anyone is still following this (!) can you see any obvious problems with this approach? It seems to me that the trick will be to avoid any form of fixing that is too rigid. Or are there any better ideas? The other option is to simply put it back as was and put up with the judder.

Maybe you could make up a longer plate to bolt accross the bottom of the box using the holes that are there to secure it----------??

Thanks Willy (and well done for following my description of the problem!). Yes I think that might be the way to go. That would be closer to the original fixing than what I have suggested. The only downside is that there might be more sideways movement than it ought to have because the part of the gearbox casing that fits between the 2 rubber blocks (and braces against them) has been removed.Still, I think it would probably be better than the current arrangement of a single mounting, so I'll probably give it a go.

I could send you another gearbox case, or you could source one locally & fix it properly. Maybe a job for next winter.

Pete,

Ditto to Tony's offer. I too have a spare case and am a bit closer to you! This part is common to all TD/F/Y's and should be readily available "locally".

Fix it properly. Without the bolt to the rear mount the entire engine/tranny can shift forward under heavy braking and the cooling fan will shred the radiator.

Thanks all. I will try to fix it along the lines Willy suggests. If it doesn't work out I will find a new gearbox casing.
