MG MG Y Type - Gearbox rubbers fork & tailshaft bolts

As the engine is out of my YT being rebuilt, I decided to replace the gearbox mount rubbers. After finding the new Moss (via LBCC) rubbers were so hard and I couldn't get enough of the Fork bolt out (below rubber grommet) to put a nut on it, I am back using my old softer rubbers.

However,

1. What thread is the fork bolt (moss 411-030)? The nut I took off went rolling under a bench and is not retrievable.

2. I also found the bolts holding the tailshaft to the gearbox were different lengths. One of which had a split pin inserted. What is the correct length and do they have split pins?

The fork bolt is 5/16" BSF. It should have a lock nut and split pin. Do not do it up tight - just enough to get the split pin in. You may have fitted the gearbox mounts incorrectly if you can't get a nut on the fork bolt. Do not drive the car without the fork bolt.

The tail shaft bolts are 7/8" long with 3/8" long shanks - also BSF. They should all have split pins.

I just checked the MG Y bolts and nuts list and found the tailshaft bolt info, but I could not find any info for the fork bolt.

The new ones are hard because they are meant to be that way. The old ones are soft because they are ancient and/or contaminated.

Yes it is 'hard' to get the new ones in there but consider "synching down" the tail using a block of wood on top of the tail and a ratchet strap either side of the tail to pull the tail down onto the cross member evenly to give you enough protrusion of threads below the cross member to get your washer and nut on at least a full nut's depth (with a lock washer if possible).

You should read the attached before you do up that fork bolt - it needs to be loose.

Paul and Tony, thank you for your comments and suggestions.

I cleaned the bolt thread and found a 5/16" BSF castle nut. I have got a nut partially onto the bolt by compressing the soft rubbers with clamps.

As I have decided not to rush the engine rebuild and forgo attending MG TYme 2018 in Canberra, I may change the soft rubbers for the new solid rubbers.

Once I get the engine back in the car and attached to the gearbox, I will use a chain around the gearbox and under my hydraulic jack and compress the rubbers as suggested by Paul. (Jack is currently holding the gearbox up)

As I mentioned earlier there should be no tension on the fork bolt if the gearbox rubber mounts are correctly installed. Refer to page E-4 and M-34 of the YA workshop manual to show how the rebound rubber and washer are installed on the fork bolt (called fork end in the manual).
