MG MG Y Type - GLC Diesel Ban

I'm not sure if everyone is aware that a £100 fine per day will be imposed effectively on most diesel engined vehicles built before 2000 entering the GLC area. This will prevent all diesel powered historic vehicles operating within Greater London. Since most commercial and private vehicles would be becoming obsolete and scrapped, owners of historic vehicles are clearly targeted by this ban. I'm aware that neither the Y type or T types are affected, but may I point out that our cars are not fitted with cat. converters nor have engine management systems and it is doubtful if they could be made to comply with the latest emission controls. In short we could be the next victim of small minded politicians who are intent on making a "green" name for themselves while ignorng the real issues. I say that we must keep the general public on side.
Bryan

I agree fully with above post. I too agree with green issues but with future designs and technology. The fact that the classic car is only a minor part of pollution and smallish percentage of the large volume of cars on the world’s roads is again another example of politicians seeking to go for the soft target. Sadly the world has lost its great leaders with political correctness and spins the order of the day.
Another example is the smoking ban in the UK, another unenforceable piece of legislation if every smoker smoked in every pub what will this government do shut them all down and fine the brewers, I think not far too much revenue is paid to HM Revenue & Collections. As non smoker its nice to have smoke free environment but really its another erosion of this countries right to freedom and more of a lurch towards our nanny state.
Richard Knight

You are absolutely correct Richard about our PC obsessed society - and God help you if they target you (hence the *s) for disagreeing . We are currently suffering under 'diversity' plans in work which basically boil down to giving priority to various 'minority' groups (the mind boggles at some of it)apart from the last minority group of all ..able bodied white male Christian heterosexuals!

On a more sober note I once read about a TD fitted with a catalytic converter (from another make of car) after installing a lead free head. I can imagine it would only work provided the car did not burn too much oil?
I am all for 'green ' cars but targeting classics is not on. About time Londoners got rid of 'red' Ken.

I joined the MG Car Club because I enjoy driving MGs and I visit the Bulletin Board to share the experience, knowledge and skills of others. I do not log on to read other peoples' political opinions. If I want to read comments like the ones above, I'll buy a Daily Mail.
There are plenty of other places on the web for political discussion. Here, can we please stick to cars in general and Y Types in particular.
P S Sharp

Lets all hope that we continue to drive our fine Y & T types, but spare a thought for some of our kindred spirits who with their fine historic Land Rovers Buses and Lorries will lose that pleasure. By the way does a VTEC fit?
Bryan

I agree entirely with Mr Sharp, but as both a Y-type owner and a Londoner I need to point out that Ken has been directly elected twice by voters, not imposed by some sinister force. Oh, and the GLC was abolished in 1986.... so do keep up!

The reason for possibly targeting older diesels is the large number of badly-tuned trucks, vans and cars that we have to put up with in London, not the tiny number of classic vehicles. Diesel particulate emissions are of a very toxic and pernicious kind. The success of the Congestion Charge, and its popularity with voters here, is in considerable part due to the pollution-reducing effect it has, which is appreciated by people like me who live here and vote.

I shudder to think how many CO2 grams per kilometre even a well-tuned Y can achieve - let's just say I try to put the choke in as quickly as I can....
Tim Griggs

Sorry for my error Tim no offence was intended. I was born and raised in London but moved away 40 years ago when it was GLC, old habits die hard! I meant GL Area. Ken has done a great deal of good for London but this rule does seem a bit draconian.
