MG MG Y Type - Grease to rear wheel bearings

Grease to rear axle bearings.
A friend of mine in the local car club (old school mechanic) has advised me not to grease the rear wheel bearings on my YA (POU 75) but to leave it to the oil from the diff to do the job. Any thoughts?
J Foster

Does the manual say anything about greasing them during services? If not may be best to leave it alone or ask your friend what the thinking behind his suggestion is. As long as the oil seal to the brake back plate is OK then presume oil from differential will make its way to the bearings. Mind you I have a YB.

Y back axle wheel bearings are not oiled by diff oil. The bearings require greasing at at the hub. Should be a grease nipple under the hub cap. See diagram attached and you can see bearings on outside of axle casing. YB is totally different and does not need greasing.

Mick Bath is correct.

John,

You have to grease them every 6000 miles.

I note the dates down of when I do the greasing on my Y's in a book and have website to remind me exactly when each schedule is due:

Might sound OTT but I can't help thinking preventative maintenance is better than cure.

For what its worth I have never greased the rear hub bearings except for re-assembling the housing. Since the car under my ownership of 55 years and well over 150,000 miles the bearings have never been replaced. Quite the revers has been the problem of keeping diff oil out of the rear brakes. Fit new hub seals and keep the oil level up to the mark has been my solution. If the half shafts are ever removed I think you will find plenty of oil will spill onto the garage floor. Bryan

As a second thought I am referring to the YA the rear hubs of the YB are different. My car is a YA and so the hub bearings get plenty of diff oil.
