MG MG Y Type - Handbrake Expander

Guys,

Can anybody help me to obtain a LH Handbrake Expander lever for my YT?

I belive the part is common with the YA, TA, TB, & TC, but (strangely) nobody seems to make them new. NTG claim to occasionally have used ones available (NTG part no. K032L) but aren't able to immediately place their hands on one.

Please help.

Cheers,
Saul.

Let me have a look in my shop later today Saul.

What have you done with yours?

Nothing - that’s the problem!

Ever since I’ve had the car the little “clip” on the horizontal part of the LH handbrake expander lever has been absent, having broken off at some stage. This is the bit that keeps the pull-off spring back from the hub. So as well as the spring having a tendency to foul the hub the whole system (expander-lever in relation to the shoes) somehow just doesn’t sit right such that once in a while through a particular combination of simultaneous foot and hand brake application I can get it to lock-up (and then have to take it all apart to free it).

I’m very surprised at the difficulty I’m having getting hold of one – what with the part being common to all the early T’s.

Cheers,

Saul.

Common to the early Ts, and every Morris and Wolseley from 1930-1939. Try the Morris Register.

These are available from Abingdon Spares part number 66393 for the Handbrake Lever R/h and 66392 for the Handbrake Lever L/h.

There is a link to Abingdon Spares on the Links page at www.mgytypes.org.

Many thanks for everybody who helped (on and off line).

I managed to order one last night from Abingdon Spares in the US.
The item is on Page 29 of their online catalog (www.abingdonsparesllc.com/catpg29detail.html). It lists part (29)032 as the RH lever and (29)032a as the LH one.
It cost (without shipping) a whopping (in my opinion) 84 dollars! Thank goodness that at least the exchange rate is in my favour.

I'll let you guys know who things pan-out.

BTW does anybody have any idea what item (29)032b might be on the same page? It's described as a Clip For Handbrake Lever and is priced much more attractively at 2.25 dollars.

Cheers,
Saul.

If you hadn't found one Saul, I could have sent you one of my 6 spare ones for $5AUD + postage. Always remember there are friends with spares that will help all around the world given the chance.

I feel indebted to you for the great article you supplied to us all on the Jackall Pump - I still owe you for that - it helped me a lot.

cheers

To clarify the difference in part numbering between my post and Saul's - I was using their paper catalogue and quoted their actual part number from that, their on-line catalogue uses the picture reference number as being a pseudo-part number (29)et seq referring to thier webpage, 032 et seq. referring to the item in the picture.

Saul, would you like me to ask them about the part you asked about [(29)032b]or will you? I think this may be the only part of this you need if it is available seperately? It is not shown in their paper catalogue at all.

I can't be bothered to ask them about part (20)032b.
If it is the "clip" I need then it would still need welding onto the expansion lever and that is not a skill I have.

I imagine the lever I ordered is already over the Atlantic anyway.

Cheers,
Saul.

If it has to be welded on (and I cannot remember if it does or not) you are definitely advised to buy the full part as brakes are fairly critical to the safe operation :-)

Just to let you all know - the expander lever arrived last week from Abingdon Spares.
It is a brand new item, not a refurbished one and appears to be good quality.
I hope to fit it this week.

Thanks again for everybody's help.

Cheers,
Saul.
