MG MG Y Type - Heat Sheild for MG YT

I purchased a heat shield around 2 years ago and started installing today, with spacers installed below the heat shield so that it fits proud of the manifold bolts. An excellent article written by the late David Pelham suggests repositioning the choke link to the front carburetor. I cannot do this on my YT, as the thin rod connecting the choke link to the throttle is only fitted to the front carburetor and there is no way I can change this to the rear carburetor. Has anyone any suggestions on how I overcome the problem of the rear carburetor choke link clearing the steering column?

Many thanks

A K Koshti

I co-wrote the article with David. My YT is currently away from home so I cannot go and look at the set up but I am not clear about what you mean by "the thin rod connecting the choke link to the throttle". The throttle and the choke are two separate parts of the carburettor. Can you please be a little more clear about what you think is a problem?

Also Andrew, the heat shield you have in your photo does not look like the one in our PDF file. Did you buy the MG TD heat shield ... and if so from where?

Hi Paul. Thanks for your response. My apologies for not acknowledging your contribution to the article.

I purchased the heat shield from the MG Octagon Car Club spares section, and it is different in design to the one shown in your article. Installing spacer blocks behind the heat shield means the rear Carb jet lever does not clear the steering column and has to be moved as shown in your article.

The front Carb on my YT has a thin rod linking the throttle to the jet lever, so that when the choke is activated, the throttle disc in the Carb body is opened to approx 30% (fast idle?). I have attached a photograph which shows this link. If I was to change the linkage as described in your article, there is no way I could re-connect this link,as the rear Carb body does not have the threaded pivot bolt hole to fit the fast idle cam. I recognise that when starting the car from cold the accelerator pedal is used to open the throttle to assist with the starting. But on the existing system, once started and while the choke is still out to warm the engine, the above link helps with keeping the engine fast idling.

If your YT did not have the fast idle cam and the system worked well with the heat shield, it would be worth my while trying it without the cam.

Your views would be appreciated.

Best wishes

The throttle levers will need to be unpinned and switched over ... but only the brass parts - you do not need to swap anything other than the brass throttle levers. That way all the other stuff will then work as planned. The Heatshield we used was a Moss one and given the design of yours I am not sure how you will connect the air cleaner and intake.

Thanks Paul. I will modify this week. However, I will still have the problem of not being able to connect the thin fast idle throttle link rod to the hole in the brass lever as it will now be on the front side of the jet adjacent to the bottom of the float chamber. I have a length of similar diameter rod and will try & make up a connecting piece so that the fast idle will still work. If not, it will be similar to my 1934 pre-series Morris 10/4 where the choke has no connection to the throttle for fast idle. However, the Morris has a separate knob on the instrument panel to adjust the idle speed!

If my US YT were here at the moment Anul I would post a picture of how I have that set up for you. I am pretty sure though, as indicated in the notes, I only swapped over the brass levers - none of the other parts of the carburettor, and that gave me sufficient clearance. All the 'black' stuff I left in place by disconnecting and reconnecting all the pins.

I have fitted double spacers with the heat shield on my YT and have not needed to alter the choke mechanism.

Thanks Peter. Unfortunately on my YT, the choke cable bracket which holds the outer sheath of the cable, touches the steering column when the heat shield and spacers are installed. The choke cannot be operated in this position. Hence I have to move the bracket to the front choke lever and turn around both brass levers by 180 degrees. The longer TD choke cable is therefore required to run to the front Carb.
