MG MG Y Type - Help finding first date of registration KRU 337

Dear All,

A month ago I bought a MG Y in Holland.

The chassis number is Y6051 and on the registration-form there is written “date of first registration” 30/06/1953 ( document from previous Holland owner who imported the car in Holland in 1982 )
It didn’t take long to realise that the chassisnumber is way too low to be a YB from ‘53.
I contacted MG-cars.org.uk and they answered me that the car should be build around november 1950 and is
indeed a MG YA.
I also contacted British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, but they replied to me that they’re information about MG starts only from 1953.

Is there a way that somebody is able to help finding out the real date of build / First use / first owner?
I soon have to register the car in Belgium and it would be to complex to change the date afterwards.

I added a pic of the car and as you can see it is a special body / transformation made in England end ‘70s.
The Original colors were Maroon and Cream and thanks to Peter Vielvoye (MG Y register) I know that the Original English licence plate was KRU 337.

I came the last 8 years to MG Live at Silverstone and i’m planning to come with the Y next year. :-)

Kind regards

Hello Tom,

Welcome to this forum with this special Y-type.

As the factory records were thrown away by some misguided fool, there's no better way than comparing known chassis numbers with known registration dates.

When I look at 'Y's on Parade' (http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/yaparade.shtml), your Y6051 is placed between two close chassis numbers: Y6041 and Y6062 that appear to have firm registration dates in their history; Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 november 1950.

I would show the Belgian authorities the Y's on Parade page and let them choose a appropriately close date?

Hi Tom,
Registration KRU 337 was issued by the Bournemouth taxation office between October 1950 and November 1951. In 1997, Bournemouth became an autonomous borough separate from Dorset County Council. It may be possible to contact Dorset County Council archives at Dorchester to check if they retain vehicle licensing records from the the 1950s. Some councils still have these records. My own YB was registered in Chelmsford, Essex. Essex County Council retain records and I was able to find out : date to registration; garage selling vehicle and name and address of first owner. Good luck with research,
Best regards,

Dear Willem, It was a nice idea of you to do so, but Belgian Government don't accept e-mails and websites as official prove. Went last Friday to ministry of mobility and they just started to laugh and asked me kindly to go out :-(

Dear Mick, Thank you so much for this information. I wrote an e-mail to the head-archivist of Dorset County and waiting for his answer. Hopefully he can help me with this. Can I ask you how you managed to know the Original licence plate??

Kind Regards
Tom

Hi Tom,
All original UK plates are year dated. The first letter is the year indicator. The second two letters are the registration district. All KRU numbers were registered between 1950 and 1951 in Dorset. For information the best place to start is "oldclassiccar.co.uk" under the heading "registration numbers'.
Archive services can take some time to answer. Essex County Council took over a month to get back with the info on my YB. One of my cars, a Bentley, took over three months but came back with details that involved 5 different personal registration numbers before my own personal plate was recorded.
Good luck with your research,
Mick

Dear Mick and all people who helped me with my search,

Today I received email from the Dorset History Centre and guess what? They will provide me with a digital copy of my vehicle’s entry within the Bournemouth Vehicle Licensing and Taxation register, reference NG/MT/2/3/5. These records include registers which vary in detail but often provide the registration mark, first owner (usually just the surname), address (usually just the town), supplying garage or dealer, make of vehicle and class of licence (i.e. private or goods).

So many thanks to all of you (Peter Vielvoye and Mick Bath in particular). If I have the luck to see you in Silverstone during MG-Live next year, I insist to have an Old Speckled Hen together. (The Y will come as well)

Yours sincerely

Tom
