MG MG Y Type - HOOD BOWS

Hi all,
If anyone has a spare set of hood-bows from a Y-Tourer or similar car, please let me know. Bows from a 1930s or 1940s Vauxhall tourer would also be ideal. TC bows would be a bit too light.

I have a friend who is rebuilding a pre-war MG K1 four seater tourer and he does not have any hood bows to suit. He is aware that he will probably need to modify things to fit, but he is a very capable guy.

Hi Bob

I am looking to have a replica set made for a new member here in the US. Email me of line if you are interested in having a quote too. Cost will not be cheap as these are very large and complicated. Shipping, even of a second hand set would be very expensive too though.

There is a very nice K1 Tourer now resident in Melbourne that could offer the opportunity to copy & make what is needed.

The configuration and dimensions of YT hood bows are not like the K1 - see photo. The K1 bows are around 6" taller and fold in a different manner. It would be simpler to make a set from scratch, than modify a set of YT bows.

I have a spare set of YT hood bows, but it would be a waste to modify them to suit a totally different car.

Good Luck

Bob,

The hood for our Y with a a replica D Type body was made from a kit for a 32 Ford called a Kwiqtop and was bought from a hot rod supplier in Melbourne for $500.

Building one from scratch is a lot of precise work and at least the kit gives you a flying start. It is adjustable and you could add the third bow if you wish.
We added 600mm to the length and about 100mm in height.

Have a look at the attached photo and the the photos of the hood folded on our post on interesting Ys.

Brad
