MG MG Y Type - HORN / TRAFFICATOR CONTROL

H,

Ive just disassembled FIVE horn/trafficator switches in the hope of making two or three? good ones but have discovered there are at least three distinctly different electrical contacts sets and of the four clockwork movements all have differences. Pics attached

Who is the expert in this field....

I would like to know which is the latest version of each, I would expect that the later versions were the 'improved' type and probably the best ones to go for...

Any other advice before I attempt to reassemble them.

I intend to get a couple of springs from the MGOC.

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob

Never seen the top right one but the other two types are common. The early one is the separate 4 pronged one and the later is the V shaped one. Both do the job but I would guess the earlier one being more complicated was more expensive. Nuffield, being a penny man was always looking for cost savings!

Essentially there are two different clock mechanisms. The large tensioning spring is common to either although mounts slightly differently. These are available from Tony Slattery engineered to high spring tensility through the Classic Woorkshop in the Shopping Mall section.

The other commonly missing part is the control arm. I have had a smalll batch of each type precision made by Masaaki, our Japanese International MG Y Type Register representative, so if you are missing one I can supply these.

Rob, you asked in the earier post about rebuilding these - I have been offering this for a while and have a specialist clock maker who fixes the clock mechanisms. So if you want yours worked over to make a good one of each, we can do that for you.

That said, I have one here that I have refurbished for a UK owner, but (due to an IT loss of data) I do not know who it belongs to. So if it is you as you read this, drop me a note off line so I can get it back to you please.

Rob,
A while back, Paul sorted one out for me.
A first class job - can't fault it

The illusive owner of the trafficator switch has come forward now so I will soon be re-uniting this one with its MG Y!

Hi Rob, I have a couple of bits missing from my timer i.e. the long arm and spring on the brass side. If you end up with a surplus, I would greatly appreciate if you would consider selling me the bits and pieces to get mine going.
Cheers, Mick.

There are three different types of mechanism Mick - which one do you have?

Hi Everyone
Just reactivating this thread in the hope I can access the photos . I am contemplating taking the mechanism apart in the next few days . Mind you as Christmas approaches I suspect there may be other things found for me to do !

Oh dear John - good luck. You have no idea how many people have said that to me ... and I have cautioned against it asking them not to do that but send what they have AS IS to me. When I eventually got them from these well meaning soles the repair cost about 3 time what it would and too 6 times longer when parts have to be hand made to replace what they broke or lost!

i have mine apart at the moment and believe it is a late one (1953 YB). What I am contemplating, while wondering if it is actually worth repairing, is how the later type is powered. Mine is like the left hand one in the second photo and I can't see any spring. You say that the same spring is used on both Paul but is it mounted in a different place on the later mechanism or is mine simply missing. Also Paul you mention the control arm as often missing and I am wondering what that is so I have a chance of knowing whether I have one. Could you enlighten us please.

Without seeing what you have there Ian it is very hard to actually comment on what you have or do not have. Can you post a picture or two?
Paul Barrow

Will these do Paul? As you can see there is no spring to be seen or am I missing something.
Thanks Ian

Looks to me like you need a tension spring. Drop me an email off-line and I can sort one out from you from my inventory.
