MG MG Y Type - How many YT'a were sold on the home market?

I guess that this is really a question that I should put directly to David Pelham. Although perhaps Paul who, I believe has a copy of the factory records (if that is the correct terminology, may also be able to help.

All I wish to know is how many YT's were sold on the home market. Lawson mentions 42 but as we are aware more than the oft quoted 877 examples were built, does that mean that Lawson's figure is incorrect?

I would be grateful if any of you historical gurus out there could possibly help please.

Many thanks

Hi Jerry

I have seen a number of comments on this subject, one being the 877 models with all but 3 being exported. The other was that a number of BFPO cars were delivered in the UK and another that the 'rump' could not be sold and were made available to UK buyers. I am afraid that it is difficult to substantiate any of these.

I can say for cetain that there were more than 877 YTs manufactured. I am in the process of issuing a new 'YT Factory Records Recreated'. I issued the first over nine years ago in November 2002 with approximately five updates since and much information has been obtained in the last year.

At present there are 211 known survivors throughout the world. However, to my knowledge there is only one surviving YT that was originally delivered to the 'Home' market.

David Pelham

Thanks David.

So we could say that with your updates that possibly 896 cars were manufactured (in conventional and CKD form)?

I'm intrigued bythe number of cars that were not delivered I too had thought that only 3 were not exported. It was checking Lawson that I came across 42 and I recall an article in one of the glossies that around 60 were sold on the domestic market - which surprised me. The BFPO cars is an interesting one and I had never thought of that.

The reason that I ask is that I preparing an A3 Panel on YT's for the stand at the NEC. I might well change my description of cars not exported to the 3 that you mention with suitable caveats. It's good to know that 211 are known survivors.

Much appreciated.

All the best

Hi Jerry
According to Ys on Parade there are two surviving YTs YT261 and YT3336. I tried to trace YT3509 when she lived in Gloucestershire in the early years but has recently turned up in California. That could have been a home sale. Do we know the numbers of the 3 thought to be sold in the UK.

I will definitely defer to David on this one but thanks for the opportunity to comment.

Best wishes at the NEC

I found some statistics last night in Anders Ditlev Clausager's 'MG Saloon Cars' which to some extent answers some of my queries.

On page 181 there is an Appendix 'Y Types: Y-Type Technical Data' This shows 0 Total RHD produced for the home market. As ADC mentions on p105 ' During its two year production period theYT remained an export-only car. No UK price (inc purchase tax) was ever quoted, no full road test everappeared in a British Magazine, and MG's production control department statistics (have you ever seen these David or Paul?) maintain thatno homemarket cars were ever built'.

He goes on to add ' Nevertheless there are surviving cars in the UK which are known to have been here since new.The explanation is that such cars were some of the direct sales or tax free Personal Export Deliveries recorded by Nuffield Exports for the model which amounted to altogether 46 cars of the 877 (we know this figure should now be 891)built'. Is this why Lawson's and ADC's figures differ and that the latter having been the archivist for BMHIT having access to more detailed fugures?

On the numbers produced and exported Australia tops the list with 325, USA 105, Canada 87 and Home Deliveries 46. The remainder are shared between 20 countries, all but 5 being part of the Empire!

Does this info stack up with that you hold David?

Thanks

Jerry,

I would like to raise the number of identified survivors to 212. I have just located YT 2948, locked in a garage in Montréal since 1997.

Curiously however, it has the chronometric TC rev-counter, and a TD magnetic speedo; and the front engine mount had "extruded itself" ~ see att. pic.

... couldn't get it to start. Either the starter pinion was jammimg on the ring gear, or the engine itself was frozen. Because of the exruded front engine mount, I couldn't get the crank handle into the dog-nut.

However, not going to worry about this one 'till spring. Winter is close at hand!

Those rear lights on that Montreal YT interest me. I have spent some tedious time making specially profiled mountings for my YA, so perhaps it would be an advantage if reproduction lamps in the style of the North American pattern could be made. Two each side to mount the rear light and turn indicator. Bryan

The YT in Montreal is an EXU model and the lights in the rear wing were a standard fitting on all EXU models. The brake light was wired up, via a relay, to operate as an indicator, the same as on the TDs exported to North America. The Trafficator Switch was also fitted to EXU models (same as fitted to the saloon) to operate the indicators.

Gordon has not only increased the number of known YT survivors but has uncovered the 43rd known surviving YT/EXU.

Regards.
