MG MG Y Type - Hydraulic brake light switch

Hi,

I have read an entry in the 'tips' from David Pelham regarding the fitting of an 'in line' brake light switch to replace, or work in conjunction with, the Lucas switch.

Can anyone tell me the latest on this? Are such items still available?

Regards

These replace the Lucas switch that is in the pedal box. There is no need to remove the old one.

The switches themselves were available from the MG Car Club Y Type Register but I believe that they no longer sell these. You could try C&C Parts in the Netherlands - info@ccparts.nl - as they were the suppliers of these.

They are simple and effective to fit.

You can get the in line hydraulic switches on ebay very easily. They fit loads of cars.

You will need a banjo fitting with two outlets - C&C have a picture of a fitting like this on their website which is a bit difficult to negotiate if you can't read Dutch! I made enquiries back in August 2010 and am still waiting a reply from C & C.

I don't think the MGB switch listed in the Ebay reference will be any use as it has a 10mm x 1mm thread - the Y brake nipples and unions etc are 7/16 UNF I think.

I don't know what thread C & C have in their two eared banjo fitting, but at least one of them must be a 7/16" to accept the Y brake pipe nipple. If they are both 7/16", the next problem is to find a switch that has a 7/16" thread - I have looked everywhere for one of these in Melbourne, without success. Seems most other cars have a smaller diameter brake pipe than Ys, therefore different pipe fittings.

I too would appreciate info on this subject.

You can fit any banjo fitting to install the switch - you don't need to have the same thread as on the Y although its ideal if you can, as you just cut the pipe to install the switch and fit the threaded bit as appropriate or so I recall as its a while back since I did mine. By the way I am over in Melbourne for 2 weeks from 20th Feb (in Bundoora where my daughter lives) _ i would be interested in seeting any Y types nearby if in reasonable travelling distance one day if it can be arranged. E mail showing on this posting.

C&C probably arent the best at getting back on emails however I know that someone in the UK IS looking at being a link and distributor for them in the UK but solely to support Y Types. This is clearly in early stages at this stage and hopefully we will be able to bring you more news on this later.

Yes, there are a few possible solutions out there - all I would say is that the C&C route is a tried and tested one and wherever possible we should seek to support vendors who support Y Types in the wider picture. For me, even here in the US, if I have a brake master cylinder for a Y/YT come into my shop - there is no thought in my mind other than it goes to C&C as they do a first class job.
Similarly with distributors, although you MAY be able to get a rebuild of your Y Type distributor more locally, Masaaki (see the Shopping Mall page) does a great job ... and fits the distributor to his own car to road test it for you before sending it out.

Please support our vendors - they are offering services to support you. If you dont receive a reply to your email, international phone calls are cheap these days so pick up the phone and talk - that is always a good thing!

I'm sure that Willem van der Veer could solve the language problem with C & C, if such it be.
