MG MG Y Type - Ignition Light
After a long run recently the ignition light did not go out on switching off . After restarting and switching off the ignition light went off and the problem has not occured since . What caused the light to stay on ? |

Not being an auto-electrician by any stretch Ed but I would say probably a sticky contact on one of the bobbins in the control box that may have got hot during the run. Why? - I dont know. Symptomatic of something else? - no idea Is it a problem? - ??? Keep an eye on it and see if it happens again, if not, just chalk it up to on of the lovely things about a Y - it keeps you on your toes. Maybe someone else can provide an insight! happY MotorinG Paul |

Possibly the engine ran on after turning the ignition off? If not some sort of electrical fault - just have a look under the dash - its not too complex under there but if in doubt watch out for burning smells indicating a short. If it happens agin disconnect the battery or have a battery isolation switch fitted so it can be turned off if a short circuit develops. |

Cut-out points in the control box are sticking. If it stays on you will get a quite hefty discharge through the box and it can cause it to burst into flames after melting the wiring. Get it seen to ASAP.... Neil. |

I'm going to need a new control box as well as Ed. I believe these are now obtainable using up to the minute solid state(?) circuitry & suitable for the Y. Can anybody comment and recommend a supplier please. |

I believe if you fit an alternator (not too difficult?) you can do away with the control box? Not done this myself though. |

The only solid state control boxes that I know of are made to order by Bob Jeffers bobj50@comcast.net His price was $80 USD the last time I saw. He needs your old control box so he can install the solid state circuit in it and calibrate it to your dynamo so there is never any chance of too much current being drawn and burning up the dynamo. I recently bought a new control box for my MG 1100 from a company here in Washington State - bit far from Ireland I know, but if you get really stuck I can help you out as I am sure they can get something made up too. Paul |

Ed, I had to replace the control box on YB 1066 3 years ago. This was the old style ( non solid state ) box. I got it from NTG Services in Ipswich. I believe they still have these old style boxes available. They trade on ebay as mgbits4u. They have one listed at the moment, I believe the later type RB 106 ( 5 post ) for about £23.00 Cheers, Pat. |
