MG MG Y Type - Ignition Warning Light

Can anyone help - mine does'nt work. With the ignition 'on' there is a voltage across the terminals of the unit.
Having checked the bulb as OK, and with the bulb screwed in as far as I can get it, there is an open circuit between the two terminals on the unit, which consists of a resistance in series with the bulb. (this can be seen on the wiring diagram). The unit has the reference 'Lucas WL4' moulded into it, but having contacted several of the specialist suppliers, nobody seems to know anything about this one.

An obvious solution would be to use a plain bulb holder and connect a resistance externally.
But of what value?

Tony - you can buy replacement ignition warning lights that might be made to fit. Try:

It is a standard LUCAS ignition light as fitted to millions of Nuffield and early BMC cars. Try The Morris Minor Centre in Bath who will stock the Morris Minor Series MM ( early Morris 1000) ignition light.

My YT has the same issue with the ignition warning light not lit when starting the car up. The bulb checked OK, there is change in voltage across the battery which drops as the engine revs increase. There is also voltage across the light, which I think must mean the holder is faulty.

Am I correct in thinking the YT is different to YA/YB? Any ideas where can purchase new one? Are they the same as T type

The YT uses a very different type of igntion warning light to the YA, YB. The YA.YB is nothing like the Morris Minor type. The saloons use a 2.5 volt bulb in a special holder with a coil resiatance wound round the outside. Check the coil for continuity, I have re-spldered a couple of these coils with good results. Proper bulb is a Lucas 970 2.5 volts that looks just like the 12volt Lucas 987. If you are talking YT then fitting is more akin to TD with 12 volt bulb and no resistance cool.

Mick,

Thanks for the response. My faulty light is on MG YT and having looked up on Staffordshire Vehicle Components they refer to the TA/TB/TC/TD as having a coil wound dash warning light. The front bezzle that holds red glass looks identical to mine but I've not had the rest out to see if there is coil, and was wanting to buy part before removal, so I can fit at my leisure.

Link above is what I think is right, but you refer to "no resistance coil?"

Thanks for the advice

Should have read low resistance coil! If you look at the bulb holder you can see the coil wound round the holder. If the coil is open circuit the bulb will not light. On ones I have checked it has just been the wire coming away from the solder. This holder does use a 2.5 volt bulb. If you put a 12volt bulb in it will work but is so dim that it is difficult to see in daylight.

Strange how these posts come back to bite your backside!! It must be from 5 years ago.
Firstly, Dave & Neil - belated thanks for your comments.
I got mine working eventually, but am not sure now how.
The coil MC refers to is of very fine wire and had come adrift. Whether I re-soldered it or got it reconnected somehow I cannot remember - sorry
By the way, if anyone has a very dim ignition warning light it's probably only because the original 2.5v bulb (see YB manual) has been replaced by a 12v one.

Hi all,
again I have a chance to show my ignorance.
I have bought an NTG ignition warning light to fit to my YT. (first image is from their web site.)
The second one is a screen shot from the cd of Y type manuals. So pn 38013 light is the YT's fitment?

Can you tell me just how the NTG one is fitted?
Is it just unscrew the bezel, put the body behind the dash panel, and re-insert the bezel?

What does the spring do? The NTG spring has small turn outs on each end.

The receiving hole in the dash panel is larger than threaded extension on the bezel, and has two niches, as if to prevent rotation of a mating part. The bezel is large enough to cover the hole. But nothing would stop the body rotating. If the spring is depressed, it seems to cover what might be a C clip. Do I remove that and insert the body from the front of the panel, and replace the spring and C clip?

i took a 12v led and had no problems,
cost me 2 Euros and you don t see it

Hi Franz,
thanks for the info. A diode would be cheaper.
However, I was missing the whole lamp holder and bezel and am trying to keep things reasonably original. Hence I have acquired the NTG one already.
