MG MG Y Type - INCLUDE YOUR Y ON THE MGCC Y REGISTER SITE

Dear All

For those of you unaware or have not accessed the MG Y Register Website (www.mgccyregister.co.uk)you will find that it very informative. It also provides a link to our Facebook Page which Neil Cairns set up a couple of months ago.

MGCC Y REGISTER ON FACEBOOK

Over the years Neil has provided a huge amount of information to various websites and magazines with articles regularly in the MG Octagon 'Bulletin'; MGCC Safety Fast. MG Owners Club 'Enjoying MG', The MG Enthusiast and several other Classic Car magazines. He really is the 'go to guy' for any information on Y types.

His Facebook site is hugely informative and provides an easy understanding of the model to anyone new to the game. Focusing on explaining to potential newcomers on the pleasures and pitfalls of Y ownership

ADD YOUR CAR AND DETAILS TO OUR WEBSITE

We would also welcome Y owners to include their Y on the website. It enables an individual to include as much about their model, themselves as they wish together with room for several photographs which can be easily enlarged by the viewer. Moreover, we are always interested to find out the reasons why individuals chose a Y and how long they have owned their car etc. History really is an important aspect of classic car ownership and provides much interest to visitors at exhibitions, shows etc

FUTURE EVENTS AND REPORTS OR RECENT Y ACTIVITY

You will also find information about future events that the Register is attending together with links to individual Y Members including for example our Registrar Jack Murray.

We will be including more links over the next few weeks.

If you need any help or more information then please feel free to e-mail me: jerrybirkbeck@btinternet.com

Thanks

Jerry,

Can't agree with you on Facebook I'm afraid. For security conscious I'd run mile in opposite direction.

Fair enough Richard but a lot of folk use Facebook. Interestingly the young Morris Minor Club which has a well respected following use this form of social medium to enable their peers (under 25) to start their club and to advise on locations for their events.
Although I joined I use it sparingly as there is a huge amount of rubbish generated. Do I really want to know what someone had for breakfast certainly not. But if you omit the crap there are some useful pieces of knowledge.
Indeed you can access the Y Register page through the website although you cannot post a comment. However, if you wished to follow up an item then it could be posted on this site, which is open to all if you join it.
Cheers

Yes, I can understand the Morris Minor Club using Facebook for the purpose you give. I used to subscribe to Facebook too in the early days until the many security scares and loss of control over your own IPR being used for Ad's etc.

10 reasons to leave listed here, I've no association to the author of the blog:-

http://paulbernal.wordpress.com/2012/12/27/10-reasons-to-leave-facebook/

One thing I don't understand is MGCC Y register's strategy with Facebook? Lots of articles are direct lift from the main site or the IMGYTR and occasionally the Octagon car club site, therefore what new information does it offer other than alternative platform.

In respect to adding car details, most are already on the IMGYTR with searchable data base open and free at the point of use for all, so why duplicate? when in the past your strategy was to "Compliment?"

Please be innovative, set up technical workshops for less mechanical minded, I include myself here. Interesting article and point in this months MGOCC bulletin about exactly this sort of thing.
Continue to drive down the cost of events such as the advertised reduction in the entry fees for the forthcoming Spring run "£18 to £4" is positive.

Sharing your registers information database to compliment the IMGYTR database too would be positive move to owners sharing history on the cars that are known.

Thanks for your thoughts Richard

I cannot see any problem with the Y Register developing its website. If its a case of sharing data then that already happens as most of Neil Cairns contributions were provided for the original site that Paul started on behalf of the Y Register back in 2004 when he was a member of the MGCC.

The articles on the Facebook site are in many respects provided by Neil and are updated with some placed on the MGCC website, They are also comments raised by Neil and others on articles from a variety of sources. The recent item in the Bulletin on MG TD and TF Clutch 'Fix'fails to make any reference to the Y where of course it was first fitted. Whilst many of us are members of the Octagon not everyone is so Facebook and the website provide an opportunity to tap into Neil's vast knowledge.

I am more than aware of car details being posted on the IMG site but the photos cannot be expanded and because of the format the owner is limited to just one pic. The Y reg site allows a bit more opportunity and enables owners to supply as much or as little information as possible.

I would have thought that Neil's Technical Report on fitting on the rebuild of his engine is indeed one course of raising awareness. I agree with you that providing guidance for the less mechanically minded is of course important. There are indeed tips that Neil and others have provided on Facebook. As you are aware Neil writes for SF, the Bulletin and Enjoying MG as well as adding useful stuff on both the website and Facebook.

All this information is free for the use of all to use which is it the way it should be. Having two websites provides further areas of knowledge which is of course extremely valuable to all.

This complemented by the Bulletin Board provides a really useful means of identifying problems, ways of overcoming them and of course access to events etc.

The information about known Y Types and updates is provided through Jack's Annual Report and is included on the website.

As an individual who embraces modern technology I would have thought that you would have welcomed greater information being available on the Y. Whilst I understand your reservations about Facebook it still is a handy medium to raise awareness of the Y, which is surely something that we would all like to see.

The strategy behind this move is simple - to use social media to potentially attract a new audience to following the Y. It was discussed at a recent Committee meeting where Neil expressed an interest in setting up an account. For this Neil must be applauded recognising the view of some towards this form of information sharing.

Good luck to all on beefing up the profile be it MG Y Register, IMGYR or Facebook!

All the best
Jerry

Jerry,

I note the 55 cars on the MG Car Club Y Register website.

I also note how difficult it is to post on the club Facebook page, until I read the response about restrictions and mistrust the club have with guests posting and replying on main time line, maybe the policies of restrict the number of users?

For those who are not up to speed couple of screen shots from Facebook post on Octagon Car Club Facebook page, as Y Owners can't post on car club page unless it is approved of general interest by moderator who must have crystal ball of what you an owners find of "General Interest"

Another superb publication from the superb T Types org website, totally t type 2, a publication full of useful, helpful, hints, tips and articles and good reference to Y owners.
Clearly a long time ago the skillful, knowledgable owners decided to up and leave MG Car Club, and to this day the www.ttypes.org and https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/ seem to continue to grow in knowledge, provide services to the owner with development of new parts, not hamstrung by policies of a club run by members for members but not allowed to sell mechanical parts for fear of... Insurance, and it being too costly to provide parts, and if asked to answer an awkward question, use "Commercial Sensitivity" as get out for having to provide an answer, according to one of their own committee members on Y Register who publicly said as much.

Come on guys over at the MG Car Club, wake up, smell the roses, if the MG Octagon Car Club can seem to sell brake parts etc etc, why can the MG Car Club not?

My guess is the MG Car Club took no deal off the table and promised to do a deal irrespective of the outcome, similar to going to used car dealer and offering the cash with a promise to not walk away with no deal, you can be assured of getting a dud!
Sorry for the parliamentry parallel to how to not run club! But on this sad day I couldn't resist the comparison.

One additional point I forgot to mention was my thanks to Paul Barrow and co. for all the hard work since the sites creation on 14th April 2002 of the International MG Y Type Register website.
I do not know at what cost to Paul's time and financial cost etc it is to build such a superb resource, however if you like I have had many benefits, feel free to donate towards repayment of some of the costs. Unlike the MG Car Club Y Register that is paid for by take of members £55 postage rate for single member, the IMGYTR is a totally free resource to the end user, and vastly larger in size.

To donate see this link

https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/howtohelp.shtml

If however you cannot afford to donate, feel free to give Paul a bigger work load from his day job of fighting fires and update your car details here, he will be eternally greatful for the distraction from day job.

Or write a technical help article and send it to one of the committee here

With contact us, across the globe, you will never be slow to get reply.

Cheers

As I am a part of what the IMGYTR has become, Thank You Richard for your comments and support.

The world has changed a lot since 1930, and even more rapidly since the birth of the Internet and more recently, Social Media.

What has also changed over time is peoples desire and demand for knowledge and information. Why would you wait for a printed mag in your mailbox to travel thousands of miles when in a flash it can travel around the world via the Internet.

Sadly the MGCC and the people who control it are stuck in an old business model and are hanging on until the death. It long ago stopped being a "club" and moved to a corporation where information was controlled and kept from it's "members".

Both Totally T-Type and the IMGYTR will continue to grow because they are bound by a creed of sharing and giving for free, the combined knowledge of past and present owners and enthusiasts. If knowledge is freely given, it should be freely shared - simple as that.

Off to the garage now,

Yours in Y-Types.

Thank you Richard and Tony for your astute observations. Besides being a firefighter Richard, I also respond 24/7 to local medical emergencies too as an EMT.

The IMGYTR is fortunate to have people like you, and all our other International Representatives who freely give of their time and personal expense and commitment with the single goal of providing services and information to MG Y owners worldwide.

As with John James, our goal is to continue to serve and not to count the cost ... although monetary donations are always welcome for sure, what matters more to us all in the IMGYTR and TTT is contributions for content from all the Y Type owners out there too! As in Richard's post of 13 March 2019 at 21:53:02 UK time - please register your Y using the link provided (if the information on our on-line database is incorrect or incomplete) and also (if registration is OK) update or add your car to Ys on Parade at https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/sendys.shtml too!

Thank you for your support over the years and we hope to be around to serve you more in the coming years.

Paul said: "Besides being a firefighter Richard, I also respond 24/7 to local medical emergencies too as an EMT."
You are an Emergency Medical Technician Paul, what a small world. My wife is a retired Paramedic, and my friend, also Paul, is a retired Firefighter. Paul, that's my friend Paul Perry, also has his own classic car. We both use the same repair centre too. It always brings out the cameras when the two cars are there together.

R Taylor

Yes very small world indeed Robert. I love what I can do for my community, be it MG Y or my neighbors. I was very pleased on Saturday last, at the tender age of 58, to get my first CPAT (Certified Physical Ability Test) for firefighters. If you are interested in checking this out have a look at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hemxzqk_v8&t=5s. The first part does not look that hard but it is 20 seconds on the stairmill at 50 steps a minute followed by 3 minutes at 60 steps a minute while wearing a 50lb (22.6kg) weight vest with and additional 25lb (11.3kg) shoulder weights which come off after the stairmill ... but you get to keep the vest on!!
