MG MG Y Type - Interior Door Handles- Position

On Y5103 the interior door handles are mounted vertically. On other Y Types I have seen, the front handles are mounted horizontally & the rear vertically. Does anyone know the original positions? I know it's trivial and the handles work in either position!

Technically there isnt a 'correct' position though most photos seem to show the rear ones as horizontally (pointing forwards!) and the front ones pointing up vertically. This is so that you can just slide your hand in, grasp and pull back. Down to taste really - a bit like wiper blade park positions! I might run a poll on both sometime! Results will be entertaining!

All four of mine point up. I have no reason to believe they have ever been removed from the car, but anything is possible.

Hi.
I have had a look at one of my ORIGINAL factory photographs and it shows both front and rear interior door handles in the HORIZONTAL position. Both pointing to the middle door post. Picture attached-I hope. Hope this helps.

OK. so I forgot to upload the picture the first time!!!.

My 1948 owners manual definitely shows the front handles vertical in one picture and horizontal in another, the rear horizontal
Adjust for maximum comfort!

I would have them all vertical for one good reason - if you need to exit the car for any reason and the door handles are horizontal they can catch your sleeve - not ideal if the car is heading for a cliff (been watching too many old movies.....).
David Mullen

If you keep the rear ones upright it's much easier to reach in through the front door and open a locked back door; or maybe my arms are too short.
Try not to drive over cliffs though, that is dangerous.

I'm pretty sure my handles were all vertical back when I bought it, so that's where I've reinstalled them - I agree with Peter that they're much easier to use on the back doors in this position. I find the front door handles easier to use this way too.

I suspect the car in Keith's wonderful period pic was not a production vehicle, but a pre-production mock-up for publicity purposes? The rear window seems to be missing, and the transmission tunnel in the rear compartment is at an odd angle. (Anorak now being taken off.... :-))
